An Interview with Kay Jaybee

I’ve put together some fun interview questions for the site, and have asked my fellow Brit Babes to complete them. Here’s the first interviewee – the fabulous Kay Jaybee. Take it away, Kay…

Kay Jaybee1. Tell us about yourself. Both your writing self and your non-writing self. What are your interests and hobbies? Do you have a day job, etc?

Hello! Well, I’m Kay Jaybee- and I’m also Jenny Kane- and sometimes- when I have time- I’m me!!

Kay is 5ft 5, wears short skirts, boots and is rather flirty.

Jenny is 5ft 5, wears jeans and is rather shy.

I am 5ft 5- I wear short skirts sometimes- but only with tights so think they could repel lasers, but mostly I’m a jeans and trainers girl.
Once my family are off to work and school, I start my days with a trip to my local coffee shop, where I write for 2 hours. After that I head home, where I work over the Internet as an admin assistant for a distance learning company for a further 2 hours. Then, it’s back to the coffee shop again to write some more!

Once upon a time I had a hobby I loved- it was writing- then one day, without me even noticing, my hobby was my job!! I live, breathe, sleep and dream writing!!

On the very rare occasions when I’m not writing, I love to walk. I’m very lucky to live near a great number of wonderful walking places, and just adore exploring new woods and moors. I also LOVE history. Many years ago I was an archaeologist, and a medieval history tutor, and I still get overexcited about being able to clamber over castles, roman villas, and other ancient sites!!

2. Give us the background on your latest release.

My latest release, The Retreat (out in Oct 2013), is the sequel to my BDSM novel, The Perfect Submissive.

This was a book I never thought I’d write! Originally The Perfect Submissive was intended to be a standalone story. However, much to my delight, it was so popular, that Xcite asked me to extend the story of Miss Jess Sanders, not just with a sequel, but with a trilogy!
After my initial joy, I then began to panic- what would I write? I wasn’t sure what challenges I’d make Jess face! It wasn’t a case of having no ideas- but of having way too many!

It was a conversation with my friend Debs that set the plot for The Retreat going. The second Debs suggested sending Jess away to a retreat, cut off from the rest of the world; I knew exactly what I’d make Jess face- and where she’d face it. I lived in Scotland for some years, and as a lover of history, I visited as many of the beautiful castles there. The Retreat is based on a cross between the gorgeous castles, Crathes, Drum and Fraser.

When Debs added that maybe I should include a fairytale theme my mind went into over-drive…

3. How did you get started with writing? And what was your route to publication like?

I started to write erotic by accident- an idea popped into my head 9 years ago while I was sitting in a cafe in Scotland. I just had to write it down, and the only thing to hand was a paper napkin. So, my very first short story saw life as scribbles on a napkin covered in the crumbs from a Mars Bar scone!!

I was very lucky- that first story was taken by Cleis Press. If it hadn’t been, I don’t think I’d have written another one. After that early publication I discovered Oysters and Chocolate – the much missed, and totally brilliant erotica site- for whom I wrote over 20 stories, before going on to publish my first solo book, The Collector (Austin & Macauley).

At the same time as working with Oysters, I also began to write short stories for Xcite, and before I knew it, Quick Kink One was created; soon to be followed by its sister book, Quick Kink Two. Thanks to the success of those early anthologies, I was offered the chance to do a novel- which lead to my bestseller, The Perfect Submissive- since then I’ve never looked back… I keep waiting for it all to go wrong…I never take any publication for granted, and I always keep my fingers crossed!!

4. What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on the third instalment of The Perfect Submissive Trilogy. Entitled Knowing Her Place, we catch up with Miss Jess Sanders fresh from her adventures at The Retreat…I’m going to say no more, as The Retreat has only just been released, and I don’t want to spoil it for you!!!

5. Do you have a particular Muse for your writing? Do any of your characters bear startling resemblances to sexy celebrities or people you admire?

Almost all of my story ideas are triggered my quite mundane things- overheard conversations, objects being left in the wrong place which cause my mind to leap ahead- wondering why certain things are where they shouldn’t be- for example, why has someone left an umbrella in a supermarket freezer…you’d be amazed what my imagination could do with that!!

I have one muse who occasionally inspires me. He isn’t a celeb (I have very little time for them truth be told), but a real person who, although he couldn’t be more different from me, always manages to trip my mind onto the correct track for any story I need to write should the dreaded writers block strike.

6. Where do you see yourself in five years? Both writing-wise and non-writing-wise?

Well, assuming my daughters still want to go to University, I’ll be completely broke as I try to support them! I hope I’ll still be writing some erotica, but my main aim is to expand out of the genre, and have at least 3 more Jenny Kane (my contemporary romance alter ego) novels out there…and maybe a play…

And now for some silly questions…

7. Muscled or skinny? Skinny (well- a build between the two if I can be picky!!)

8. Tall or short? Short (although my husband is tall- whoops!

9. Boxers or briefs? Boxers

10. Moustache or beard? Beard (neither for preference)

11. Long hair or shaven head? Shaven hair for a man, long for a woman

12. Tattoos or piercings? Tattoos (neither for preference)

13. Intelligent or funny? Funny (can’t I have both?)

14. Blond, brunette or red head? Red head

15. Hottest celebrity (tell us why, if you like)? Tricky as I don’t really follow the celebrity thing- but someone who has really earned their fame, who also used to tickle my fancy was Ray Winstone as a young man- he was so hot in Robin of Sherwood- and he still has a twinkle in his eye!

16. Top same-sex crush (or opposite sex if you already like same-sex!) Drew Barrymore

17. Most disliked celebrity (tell us why, if you like)- anyone who is famous for being on a reality TV show, but has done nothing else with their lives, is a major turn off for me.

18. Favourite food Chinese- especially the starter platters you get in Chinese restaurants.

19. Favourite book (tell us why, if you like) – This is tricky- I like so many different genres! It would have to be The Rose Revived by Katie Fforde for a light read, The Daughters of Cain by Colin Dexter for a touch of crime, and Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett for cynical brilliance!

20. Favourite place in the world (tell us why, if you like) – I love so many places- but Dartmoor has to be up there – it’s so barren, yet so vibrant, and you can walk for miles without seeing another living soul. Not only that, but the footprints of our ancient ancestors are invisibly marked all over it- paradise for an ex-archaeologist who likes a leg stretch!

21. Anything else you’d like to add? If you ever meet me, offer me a cup of coffee- I’ll be a friend for life xx

My latest release is The Retreat- Part 2 of The Perfect Submissive Trilogy.

The RetreatBlurb-

Just as Jess is beginning to relax into her new life as a submissive at The Fables Hotel, her employer Mrs Peters announces that she is loaning both Jess, and her dominatrix Miss Sarah, to one of their most demanding clients; Mr David Proctor.

Whisked away by the mysterious Kane to The Retreat, hidden in a remote part of Scotland, Jess and Miss Sarah find themselves teaching another submissive to meet Proctor’s exacting rules.

As Jess comes to terms with the techniques of The Retreat Mistress, and the strictly overpowering dominatrix Lady Tia, she discovers that Proctor’s motives may not be all they seem.

Just who or what is Fairtasia? And why does Jess feel like she’s walked into a warped fairy tale?

In order to get back to The Fables, Jess is going to have to be more than just a perfect submissive…

Extract-

JESS WASN’T SURE exactly what she’d expected to happen once they’d been escorted into the castle. What she had been sure of, however, was that Miss Sarah was would be right. The moment they crossed the threshold into David Proctor’s territory, they’d be subjected to some kind of sexual action that would make their in-flight entertainment look mild.

The submissive had spent the final part of the journey mentally preparing herself for an instant stripping, beating, and group fuck by every member of the staff she was there to meet. She’d contemplated being fastened to some sort of table or chair, so that her naked frame could be examined and teased to the point when her endurance broke; and being the target for every sort of sex toy ever invented. What Jess had not expected was nothing.

When she and Miss Sarah had finally been ordered to approach the castle, they’d stuck close together, walking slowly. As they’d stepped before the main door, someone from within had let out a whistle, and a male-shaped shadow had appeared from the gloom of the night. Steering Jess by the neck, the stranger had taken her inside, while Kane emerged from the door and shoved Miss Sarah in a totally different direction.

Ushered through the large entrance hall, with barely enough time to take in more than the solid, whitewashed walls, and the profusion of bold tartan chairs and sofas, Jess had been vaguely conscious of a group of people standing to one side. They mutely observed her being swiftly manoeuvred past them.

Still held by the back of the neck, she was frogmarched along a narrow corridor by a slim young man Jess hadn’t been able to see clearly in the dark. Whoever he was, he had kept purposely behind her as they strode through the castle, and she hadn’t dared ask him anything as she saw that a spiral staircase of bare stone lay ahead of them.

Two minutes later, they’d reached an open wooden door. With no corridors to either the left or right, there was no other way to go but through, and Jess had suddenly been reminded of Rapunzel, who’d been imprisoned in a room at the top of a tower with nowhere to run.

The guide held her by the shoulders. His unspoken instruction that she should not try to look at him was made clear by the intensity of his grip. With an unexpected burst of speed, the man then took a step down, at the same time urging Jess firmly forward. No sooner had she stepped into the room than the door was snapped shut behind her, and Jess had found herself alone in a circular space which had curtains drawn all the way around it.

Five minutes later, she was still taking slow, deep breaths as she tried to soothe herself. Whatever was happening would be for a reason, and if she knew David Proctor like she thought she did, Jess was sure that somewhere in the room there was probably a camera observing her every move, gauging how she was reacting to this enforced situation.

Standing still, she cast her eyes around the room. If life at Fables had taught her anything, it was that the more detail she took in about her surroundings, and the more attention she paid to every word spoken to her, the more she’d learn, and the better her chances of survival and erotic contentment would be.

‘So, I’m inside the turret, then.’ In the centre of the room, a spindle-backed wooden chair sat next to a matching table. ‘All that’s missing here is a spinning wheel. Forget Rapunzel, this is Sleeping Beauty!’ Jess muttered to herself as she walked around the rug-covered stone floor, skirting the very edges of the room as if she was a tiger patrolling the surrounds of its cage. She ran her hands across the floor to ceiling dark purple velvet curtains. Unsure if she wanted to see or not, she drew them back.

The majority of the room’s walls were constructed of large blocks of bare granite, but as Jess threw open the third curtain, she stepped back in surprise. A wooden door, about four feet high, and two foot across, had been built into the curve of the stone. ‘OK, so maybe this isn’t Sleeping Beauty after all. Maybe it’s Snow White.’

With her heart thumping, Jess placed her hand on the brass doorknob, and bent to see what was through the doorway. ‘Oh thank God!’
It was a washroom. A modern shower cubicle, sink, and toilet were plumbed into the exquisitely tiled carpeted semicircle. Making use of the facilities, Jess wondered if this was to be her room; where she was to spend all her time when she wasn’t doing whatever it was that Proctor expected her to do.

Returning to the larger room, Jess continued to throw back the curtains, wondering if any other cubbyholes were secretly attached to this turret. No more doors appeared but, drawing back the last pair of drapes, Jess jumped as she came face to face with her own bedraggled reflection.

A huge, round mirror stared at her. ‘So maybe this is Snow White! Complete with the scary mirror on the wall and the dwarf-sized door. Which means, I only have the Wicked Queen left to meet.’

As soon as she’d spoken the words she slammed her hand to her mouth, wishing she hadn’t said them out loud. Until that point she’d considered herself to be doing well. She’d shown whoever was watching her via the camera she was convinced was installed in the turret somewhere that she was capable of acting calmly, and was brave enough to explore, not merely sitting and cowering on the chair awaiting her fate. Now she’d blown it. I might as well have laid on the bed and wanked without permission, Jess thought crossly. Instantly, she wished she hadn’t had that thought either, for some solo comfort from her fingers over her ever-damp clit would been have more than welcome…
