My stories often begin with a flash, a “what if” moment. I begin with an opening and an idea of where I hope to end up. The middle of the story is left completely to the characters.

When I sat down to write Accidental Intent, I had Lucy (my “heroine”) nattering in my ear about this that and the other. She told me about her business and her dogs. I was hooked with her dogs. A bloodhound named Rufus and a St. Bernard named Baloo. So I was in, but quickly questioned my commitment when things began to get out of hand.

I had envisioned another contemporary romantic comedy much like my first book, Summerland. It had all the earmarks—an opinionated heroine, a sexy man (Nicolai, the love interest stepped forward and I swooned before he said a word) nosy friends and an idyllic location. Longmont Colorado is incredibly scenic.

However, my seemingly innocent contemporary romance got off to a not so innocent start, when Sheila, Lucy’s best friend, finds a dead body in a dumpster. Suddenly Longmont isn’t looking quite so innocent. Nicolai stepped forward and announced he is a homicide detective. His low gravelly voice should have been music to my ears, but instead it just irritated me. How the hell am I supposed to write a fun light hearted contemporary romance with a dead body stinking up my idyllic setting?

Then another body was found, bad guys started to creep out of the woodwork and I had no idea who they were. It had been a couple decades years since I had read Nancy Drew, but my detective skills were still fairly decent.

Three months later I was staring at a fun murder mystery romp that holds danger, intrigue, hot romance, goofy dogs, annoying exes, a lot of coffee and some incredibly fashion forward footwear.

During the rising heat of summer, Lucy Lafferty reaches the conclusion that men aren’t worth the effort, especially with an ex-sex partner who pushes to revive a relationship that never existed. But when she’s thrown together on a murder investigation with Detective Nicolai Petrovski, the mercury rises to dangerous levels that have nothing to do with the season. Investigating a backwoods dog rescue unknowingly puts them both into dangerous territory and Lucy, despite all her bravado, can’t help falling for the magnetic cop.
