Acceptance of Interracial Relationships

In Desert Heat and Native Tongue, my characters, Hugh Wilkes and Rustam Balkhi have several hurdles to leap. One of them, which is pretty damn high, is the fact that Balkhi is Muslim. It’s not a problem between the two of them—after all, Wilkes’ army career means he’s had lots of dealings with Muslims and is perfectly happy and comfortable in their company—but more an issue with other people.

Part of the story in Desert Heat is the reaction of some Muslim extremists to their countrymen acting as translators for the British Army. They don’t agree with helping the “infidels” and have been known to act violently—or worse—towards those that do. This is a very real worry for Balkhi, who has been working with the army for a while now, and knows he must consider whether it is safe for him to return to his home village and his family or not, or whether he’s putting himself and his relatives in danger.

Another thing that would certainly displease the extremists is the fact of Balkhi’s sexuality. Throughout the course of his and Wilkes’ story, something happens which reminds him how precarious his situation already is, and cements for him the fact that he will, for the time being at least, have to keep away from his family, and certainly not let them know he is gay. It’s hard for him, but he’s a practical man and knows it’s best for all concerned.

Wilkes, on the other hand, has a very open-minded family. They don’t yet know he’s gay, but although he’s pretty sure it won’t be an issue, the one thing he is sure of is that his family won’t have the slightest problem having an Afghan Muslim in their home. It may be a double whammy—discovering Wilkes is gay and dating someone of a different culture—but he’s grateful to know that at least he can still be safe in his childhood home with his family, unlike Balkhi.

Acceptance is something that varies from person to person, and while it’s a shame that Balkhi has such a tough time of it, it was important to me for the story to reflect real life situations.

Thank you so much for reading.

Happy Reading,

Desert Heat & Native Tongue Rolling Out To Other Retailers #erotica #romance #gay #mm

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to let you know that the Desert Heat & Native Tongue two-book bundle has finished its exclusivity period with Amazon, and is now available on various other retailers.

Here’s a reminder of what it’s all about:

Desert Heat:

Their love is forbidden by rules, religion and risk. Yet still they can’t resist.

Captain Hugh Wilkes is on his last tour of duty in Afghanistan. The British Army is withdrawing, and Wilkes expects his posting to be event-free. That is, until he meets his Afghan interpreter, Rustam Balkhi, who awakens desires in Wilkes that he’d almost forgotten about, and that won’t be ignored.

Native Tongue:

They may be back on British soil, but the battle isn’t over.

When Captain Hugh Wilkes fell for his Afghan interpreter, Rustam Balkhi, he always knew things would never be easy. After months of complete secrecy, their return to England should have spelt an end to the sneaking around and the insane risks. But it seems there are many obstacles for them to overcome before they can truly be happy together. Can they get past those obstacles, or is this one battle too many for their fledgling relationship?

My Sexy Saturday #80 – he’d have carried an elephant if it meant he got to see Balkhi. #MySexySaturday

My Sexy Saturday

Welcome back to My Sexy Saturday. This is where writers post either 7 words, 7 sentences or 7 paragraphs from their published work or work in progress. I’m sharing another snippet from Native Tongue, following on from last time. I’ll be moving on to something else soon, so make the most of these gorgeous boys while you can! 😉

If he could find a space in that section—although the flats had spaces, they weren’t allocated—then he wouldn’t have so far to carry his stuff. Not that it mattered—he was plenty strong enough and didn’t have anything heavy, anyway. Years in the military had taught him how to pack light. And he’d have carried an elephant if it meant he got to see Balkhi.

Spotting a slot, Wilkes headed for it, pulling in carefully, then turning off the reading light and the engine. Taking his phone from his pocket, he fired off a text message.

Just pulled into a parking space downstairs. I’m here! H x

Mid Week Tease: …he was determined not to rush things. #MWTease

MWTease15Hi everyone,

Welcome back to Mid Week Tease! Here’s another tease from Native Tongue, my M/M erotic romance novella. Enjoy! I’ll probably be switching to something new soon, so make the most of the boys while you can 😉

Native TongueDespite this, he was determined not to rush things. Yes, he wanted nothing more than for the two of them to get naked and horizontal, then hot and sweaty, but he also wanted for them to take their time. To tease, to torment, to explore each other’s bodies in minute detail. Technically, they’d been having sex for months, but certainly not as frequently as they’d have liked, and the vast majority of the times they’d been together had been snatched, rushed moments. This time, it would be different.

Enjoying their smouldering kiss for a little while longer, Wilkes basked in the anticipation of what was to come. His cock felt fit to burst, but he tried to put it out of his mind. They had two whole days to enjoy each other—that was lots and lots of hours, though it would never be enough. He’d brought plenty of condoms and lube with him, too.

The possibilities were endless. He grinned against Balkhi’s mouth.

Balkhi pulled away, a quizzical expression on his face. “What are you smiling at, Hugh?”

Raising his eyebrows, Wilkes replied, “You really have to ask? I’m here, you’re here. More importantly, no one else is here. We’re together, we have privacy for the first time ever, and I’ve really fucking missed you! Really really missed you.” That last part was growled more than spoken, and Wilkes was gratified when Balkhi gulped, then gave a shy smile.

My Sexy Saturday #79 – So close… #MySexySaturday

My Sexy Saturday

He didn’t know the area, but Balkhi had explained what a great location it was—close to a Tube station, giving him easy access to the university hospital on the south bank of the Thames. Even better, it was outside of the congestion zone, and the accommodation came with its own parking space, meaning Wilkes could drive right up to the block of flats without incurring any charges, or have the hassle of finding somewhere to leave his vehicle.

His heart pounded as he flicked on the reading light, then grabbed a piece of paper from the passenger seat, which detailed his journey. He hadn’t needed it up until now—being fairly familiar with London—but a glance towards the bottom of the page gave him the details he needed to locate Balkhi’s block of flats. So close—he could see the damn building, but apparently needed to be on the opposite side to gain access to the car park. A set of traffic lights and a junction later and he was rolling over a speed hump… finally!

Meticulous as ever, Balkhi had even told him which part of the car park was closest to his place.

Mid Week Tease: …like their first time all over again. #MWTease

MWTease15Hi everyone,

Welcome back to Mid Week Tease! Here’s another tease from Native Tongue, my M/M erotic romance novella. Enjoy! I’ll probably be switching to something new soon, so make the most of the boys while you can 😉

Native TongueWhen the door had been closed behind them, there were a couple more seconds where they didn’t speak. Wilkes took the opportunity to put his bag down, then turned to Balkhi.

“Hi,” he said, taking a step closer.

“Hello.”

“Thank fuck you live alone.” At that, Wilkes fully closed the gap between them, put his hands on Balkhi’s shoulders and pushed him roughly against the door.

Letting out a squeak of surprise, Balkhi’s eyes widened.

Wilkes didn’t stop to look into them. Instead, he moulded his body against his lover’s, cupped his face and moved in for a kiss. The first kiss, the first physical contact of any kind that they’d had in weeks, and it was obvious how much they both needed it. Balkhi’s mouth opened immediately to admit Wilkes’ tongue, and he wallowed in all the emotions coursing through him; lust, need, relief… Delicious sensations followed; the scratch of Balkhi’s goatee against Wilkes’ clean-shaven face, the heat of Balkhi’s mouth, the swirl and thrust of his tongue, the press of his erection against Wilkes’ own.

Fucking hell, I’ve missed this.

It occurred to him that really, he hadn’t missed it per se, because the two of them had never had it quite like this before. Always, without exception, they’d been worried about being discovered. They’d never had true privacy, never had the luxury of being together without looking over their shoulders, or at the very least, being conscious of making too much noise. God, this was almost going to be like their first time all over again. They’d be able to let go completely. Wilkes had a feeling it was going to be utterly mind-blowing.
