I Do Like To Be Beside the Seaside – At Smut by the Sea! (@smutbythesea)

Hi all,

Yes, I know, I’m terribly behind in writing and getting this post up, but I have been stupidly busy all week, what with a new book coming out, and a bazillion and one other things to do. I’m sorry 🙁 *slaps own wrist* but I’m here now, so here’s my write up of Smut by the Sea

This year, the journey up to Scarborough was a breeze. Last year we had to leave late afternoon, which of course meant we hit rush hour traffic, and it went to hell from there. This year, the other half and I zipped away around lunchtime and pootled north east until we got our feet wet. We had a few hours wandering, playing 2p machines and buying fudge, before we convened in The Black Lion pub to start the celebrations off right! We didn’t have too late a night, though, knowing we had to be up early and reasonably sensible the following morning. After all, I had to be all editor-like, and the other half had to be a book selling maestro!

Saturday arrived without too much trouble, where we quickly realised one book selling table was not going to be enough – there were lots of awesome smutty books up for sale at a mere £5 each! The other half arranged them all (I don’t interfere – he likes things just so) while I wrote jazzy price labels, highlighted trilogies, exclusive tomes and encouraged folk to get their purchases autographed (what can I say – it makes us writers feel very special when we’re asked for an autograph!).

I’m sorry to say I missed the welcome session and the sessions from Victoria Blisse and K D Grace as I was still busy helping out on the book stall, putting swag on the lovely swag table and generally chatting with folk I see once a year if I’m lucky! By the time my session rolled around, I just about tore myself away from my lovely networking and headed in to the main room to be all editor-like. It was nerve-wracking indeed to see people sitting there who’ve been writing much longer than me and looking for editorial advice! I’d deliberately added in some interactive parts to the session so I didn’t just chat at people. Questions/prompts included:

  • Think outside the box! I shouted out several themes in turn and the attendees were to scribble down a story idea on that theme that was outside the box. The themes: seaside (well, it would have been rude not to!), alfresco, city, curvy women (or men!), lesbians (I was thinking of Sapphic Smut for this one).
  • Input time. I asked the audience to put their hands up if they knew how to double space a document and add indents.
  • Input time. What do people do, or think they should do when writing to avoid repetition.

There was a great deal of frowning (which I was later told was a thoughtful expression), pursed lips, “eureka” moments and frantic scribbling, so it seems my session hit the spot for a lot of people. Hopefully I armed the group with enough information to increase their chance of impressing editors in future – or at least making editors’ lives easier.

Lunchtime ensued, which prompted a mass exodus to the groaning (with weight, not disappointment!) sandwich table, where I was delighted to see Cadbury’s Mini Rolls. Loooove me some Cadbury’s. I reconvened with my book selling maestro other half to let him know how the session had gone, and he let me know how book sales were going. It seems there’s been a definite shift over the past few years we’ve been doing this – people have gone from preferring anthologies to preferring novels, so I was very glad I had copies of Stately Pleasures available 🙂

Next, Victoria Blisse started the Reading Slam, which was broken into two sessions so we could have a break in between for refreshments. I was in the last session, but went along to the first to cheer along my fellow readers, especially since there were a couple of first timers in there. Nerves were high, especially since Mistress Kay (also known as my lovely and not very scary at all friend Kay Jaybee) was dressed to thrill, armed with a stopwatch and a paddle, ready to apply said paddle to the arses of those that went over their allotted time. I think the audience enjoyed the anticipation of Mistress Kay stepping out from her podium and sidling towards the current reader as much as the readings themselves. I’m glad to report that there were some spankings doled out – namely to myself and Victoria Blisse! But I got my own back, for when Mistress Kay did her reading, I took over as timekeeper got in a sneaky thwack on her bottom! The crowd were most impressed – I don’t think they’ll forget that in a hurry 😉 It was fantastic for me to read out loud from Stately Pleasures for the first time, and I’d deliberately picked an utterly filthy bit, which seemed to go down well, if you’ll pardon the pun!

After a sad goodbye and rounds of thanks to attendees and the wonderful sponsors, other half, myself and others helped Victoria and her hubby Kev pack everything down, clear up and make sure Scarborough Library was left more or less as we’d found it.

But the fun was not over! Folk staying in town overnight headed to The Black Lion once more for (absolutely terrible) karaoke (except for Victoria and her sister, who were, um, better), lots of giggling and chatting and annoying the other punters by totally ignoring the football match. Much of what happened will stay between those four walls I’m afraid, but needless to say there was much laughter and rude talk!

And that, my friends, is Smut by the Sea in the smallest nutshell possible. My highlight, as always, was seeing old friends and meeting new ones, most especially the members of The Brit Babes Street Team who attended, where I was able to give hugs and get to know them better, after corresponding online for so long!

There is a come down after every one of these events… people not chatted to, or not for long enough, people who couldn’t make it… but the bright side is in just a few months, we’re doing it all again, but in the city. Yes, Smut Manchester is nigh! The event is still in its planning stages, but I’m already hearing whispers of fantastic sessions, cool readings and lots more naughtiness. So if you can get to Manchester, England, on 15th November, I’ll see you there!

Happy Reading,

Lucy x

Smut by the Sea 14th June 2014

Postcard_AdWhen you think of Scarborough, many good things jump to mind. From the beach and many arcades to fish, chips and ice cream but I don’t suppose erotica is automatically one of those things. Well on the 14th June this year for the second time Smut by the Sea will take place at Scarborough library and it’s going to get really smutty.

What is it? Good question. It’s a gathering of authors and readers of erotica and erotic romance. There will be talks on Inspiration from Victoria Blisse, Writing Better Erotica from KD Grace and Social Media and promotion with Lucy Felthouse.

There’s also an afternoon stuffed full of sexy snippets read by the authors themselves, a free lunch and the unique and much loved Erotic Tombola and book stall, to feed your need for smut! If you ask nicely you can get your favourite authors to sign the books for you.

It’s a fun gathering of like-minded folk and if you want to attend you can pick up your tickets here. It’s £20 for all day and that includes your buffet lunch. A complete bargain.  All the details you need can be found at http://smutbythesea.co.uk . There is still room in the reading slam, so if you’re interested in joining in with a 5 min reading (not a moment more or you get spanked!) then drop Victoria a line.  Victoria @victoriablisse.co. uk (no spaces) and she’ll pencil you in!

If you live in a far flung corner of the world and can’t make it to Scarborough you can check out the advertising options so you can be with us in spirit. We’re also still looking for sponsors, if you or someone you know wants some fabulous, focused promotion then check out the Sponsor options.

The smutters look forward to seeing you there!

Smut by the Sea – Scarborough Will Never Be the Same!

The journey to Scarborough was hellish due to something happening on the A1 (M), but boy was it worth it! After dumping bags and a speedy change of clothes, it was to the Black Lion for drinks and jollity. It wasn’t too late a night because the next day was going to be busy, but it was very fun!

Saturday morning dawned noisily with the seagulls we all wanted to shoot, and we headed over to the library to help set up. Then we sneaked off for breakfast and came back in time for the doors to be opened to the public. From then on, there was hardly time to breathe as Victoria kicked off with an introduction, then myself, Tabitha Rayne and Rachel Kincaid did some reading. I started the audience off gently with a nice sweet passage from A French Affair. I thought it was a little early for full on raunch! The other two girls more than made up for it with some hot steampunk and a naughty tale of premature ejaculation 😉

There was a break, and the next reading panel consisted of Ashley Lister, Lexie Bay, K D Grace reading as Grace Marshall and Jennifer Denys. I have to say that I’m not a fan of poetry, but Ashley Lister’s funny poems are more than enough to change my mind. Lovely Lexie read a passage from her story in Coming Together: With Curves, Grace Marshall got us hot under the collar with a snippet of sexiness in a lift, and last but not least, Jennifer had us all giggling with a very humorous piece from one of her books.

Next up was another break, whereby Victoria and I told people to come and grab us if they had any questions. It was an opportunity to check up on the bookstall and the erotic tombola, very capably manned by mine and Victoria’s respective other halves.

Slave Nano then launched his very naughty BDSM novel, Adventures in Fetishland, which involved some fabulous costumes: The Mad Hatter, The Red Queen and the Dormouse, to name just a few. This was certainly not smut for the faint-hearted!

The next section was a panel consisting of myself, Victoria, Ashley Lister and K D Grace in which we answered questions on writing erotica and getting it published. As always, no one wanted to ask the first question, but once someone did we were fielding queries left, right and centre. I hope we provided people with lots of useful information!

Next was the afternoon’s final reading section with Janine Ashbless, Liv Honeywell, Domitri Xavier and Gemma Parkes. I must confess I wasn’t in the room for this one as I was rushing around sorting out other things, but I have it on very good authority that the readings were excellent.

The break between daytime and evening events was next, and myself and my other half dashed out into the Scarborough sun/rain/sun/rain pattern for a play on the 2p machines, some candy floss and a chip cob. Then it was back up the hill to the library.

The evening event was ticketed and people were supplied with swag bags, free drinks and nibbles, and much more. Unfortunately, the burlesque act for the evening had car trouble and so Victoria did some skilful juggling of the schedule and everyone was still suitably entertained.

There were readings from Smut by the Sea Volume 1, Smut by the Sea Volume 2, Smut in the City and Slave Nano read from Adventures in Fetishland, Gemma Parkes treated us to another snippet of a hot story and K D Grace read from The Pet Shop. There was also time for more questions and giggles, then it was time to call it a night. Well, sort of.

Many people stayed behind to help pack up and we did it in such record time that Victoria and Kev had to wait for the caretaker to arrive, while the rest of us carted stuff back to the hotel and got freshened up. Then we headed back to the Black Lion for buffet, drinks and karaoke. It was a pretty messy night, it has to be said. It included me singing karaoke (an X-Factor hopeful I am not) with Tabitha Rayne, sausage rolls being thrown, breadsticks, Strongbow, vodka and balloons. There are still photographs emerging here and there and let’s just say not a single one of them is sensible!

I had a fabulous time overall, was happy to meet up with buddies that live all over the country and meet some people I’d not met before, notably Tilly Hunter, who also stepped in to read. She says it was her first time, but she was so good I’m not convinced! Kerry-Ann McDade gets a very special mention as she travelled all the way from Northern Ireland to be with us. I also had a great time chatting with the Crowned Jewels folk, Anna Sky, a lovely lady called Bea, the owner of Cupido Magazine (a Norwegian magazine that’s featured one of my stories), and many other people I’m sure I’ve forgotten. There were also people I didn’t get much chance to talk to, but hopefully there will be many more chances in future as Victoria and Kevin take the UK by storm with their Smut by the Sea and Smut in the City events. Here’s to next time, guys!
