Guest Blog: Sommer Marsden

The one who leaves you star struck…

I’m having fun shining a spot light on main characters in my current novel Restless Spirit. It’s sort of like having a psychotic break, but for a good cause. When you ‘talk to your characters’ folks tend to raise an eyebrow. I’ve covered Stan and Adrian in previous blogs. Today we move on to a bright and shining star—literally.

Sometimes in a novel we bring in a famous character. And by we, I mean (at least, for me as a writer) he shows up unannounced and says, “Hey! I’m here and I’m something else.”

In Restless Spirit, that particular character would be Reed Green—tall,  lean, pretty longish hair. He’s the one that any girl would be star struck over. And yet, Tuesday isn’t so much struck as intrigued. Because she’s much more clever than I am, apparently. I’d be stammering and stalking, but Tuesday is just soaking in the surreal scenario of having former child TV star and current berry farmer Reed Green as a potential lover.

So, let’s see what Reed has to say about Tuesday:

Hey, Reed, might I say you are as hot as you look on TV?

And might I say you are as sweet as the berries on my farm?

You’re quite a bullshitter when need be, eh, Reed?

Only as much as necessary. But I meant it. You are sweet.

I wanted to start in the same place I did with the other men.

[grumbles] Other men, right. Well, where shall we start?

Favorite beverage?

That’s easy. It was a nice Port I had at a dinner party for the president of the network I used to work for. It was a 19-something or other. I’ll have to check in my book.

You keep a book of beverages?

I keep a notebook of everything  I like.

So in that book, said the woman with the ham-handed segue, what is listed as your favorite sexual position.

[laughs]. That’s easy. Whichever one brings the most pleasure at any given moment.

Touché. So now let’s move on to Tuesday. What do you think of Tuesday Cane?

I think she’s the most genuine woman I’ve ever met. A bit broken, a bit angry, a lot passionate and funny as hell. Oh, and I’ve heard she’s wicked with a baseball bat. I like her. A lot. Probably more than I should.

Why do you say that?

Tuesday’s a heartbreaker. Doubly so because she doesn’t realize it.

So what do you think of your chances with her?

As good as anyone’s honestly. But a guy can hope.

Last question, Reed.

Shoot.

Can you sign this picture for me?

Sure. Who should I make it out to?

*At the end of the Restless Spirit tour I’ll draw two winners from comments. One print copy winner (I’ll let you know what books are available in print) from my backlist and one ebook winner from my backlist. To see my backlist see my Amazon author page:

Restless SpiritTuesday Cane walks out on her life and her abusive man when she inherits her grandmother’s house at Allister Lake. There she finds plenty of distractions to take her mind off her loss with her sexy neighbour and handyman Shepherd, former TV star Reed and her old flame Adrian. But, as time passes, she senses that something is not quite right with her new life. And no amount of steamy sexual encounters can hide her anxiety. Surrounded by so many interesting men and erotic enticements, Tuesday has no intention of committing to one man ever again. But the more she insists she’s nobody’s girl, the more she wants to be somebody’s girl. Will she continue to be a restless spirit and run from love or will she be won over?

Excerpt from Restless Spirit by Sommer Marsden

I pointed to pretty boy with my pen. ‘I’ll get your Dr Pepper … um … Mr …’

‘Reed,’ he said. ‘My name is Reed Green.’

‘Like Mr Green Jeans!’ I said. Then I turned fast and prayed to drop dead. Because that always impresses a good looking man … a Captain Kangaroo reference.

I pulled his Dr Pepper and took his order, fish sandwich with lettuce, mayo and a toasted roll, an order of fries and lemon meringue pie for dessert. When I delivered the pie I blurted, ‘Undercover Father!’

He grinned at me and I felt that curl of heat in my gut again. Which made me think of Shepherd and what he’d done to me. And that made me think of meeting him in an hour and that made me antsy.

‘Good job.’ He tucked into the pie, rolled his eyes, took another bite.

‘And then–’

‘And then some other nothing-special, average TV shows and two movies and I got bored.’ He smiled as if to say end of story.

‘Oh, sure. I’m sorry. And now you …’

Why had I started that sentence?

‘Now, I write screenplays sometimes – if I feel like it – and have a berry picking farm.’

I laughed. ‘A what?’

‘A berry picking farm.’ He gave me a teasing smile.

‘Ah, see, I look at you and immediately think berry farmer.’

The traffic into Irv’s Eats was slowing down and Irv did not clear his throat at me. ‘As you should. Former TV star and now berry man.’

I smiled, realising when I glanced at the clock that in less than an hour I’d be at Shepherds. I had a vision of him on his knees, my fidgety fingers clutching my thighs as I came, water dripping from my hair, rain on the windows. I sighed without thinking about it.

‘You OK?’

‘I am. Sorry. My brain is racing, I just moved here, new job … just new everything.’

‘Ah, let me take you for a drink tonight and calm you down.’ His features were fine and almost delicate. High cheekbones, flawless skin, and Lord, those October sky blue eyes. I almost said yes and then, ‘I can’t. I have plans.’

‘Of course.’ There was that boyish smile, smooth silken voice that wasn’t too deep and manly or too soft and feminine. It was a liquid silver voice that flowed and calmed and made you think happy thoughts. ‘What was I thinking? A gorgeous young thing like you moves to town and I think I’d get first opportunity to woo you? Crazy old man.’

‘Old? Like what? Thirty?’

‘Thirty-three. See? What do you know?’

‘That you’re a whole four years older than me. Are you calling me old, Mr Green?’

‘Would it earn me a drink?’

‘No.’

‘A smack?’

‘Maybe.’ I took the tab and the money he offered.

‘How about you just let me take you for a drink on a night you don’t have plans and I can tell you how you don’t look a day over twenty-two.’

‘Deal,’ I said. ‘I’ll go get your change.’

Punish Me GoodFem dom mini-anthology Punish Me Good was reviewed by BDSM Book Reviews, and here’s what they had to say:

“Overall I found both flashy stories to be pleasantly sweet. They are a teaser which makes me want to read a full length book by Ms. Felthouse. I recommend this story to those who want to read a bit of light femdom.”

Can’t say much fairer than that! :) Read the full review here.

Sunday Snog – Off the Shelf

Sunday Snog

Silk StockingsHere’s a snog-tastic snippet from my brand new and first ever novella, Off the Shelf, which is one of three novellas in the totally awesome Silk Stockings, from Xcite Books.

He said just one word before leaning down and capturing her mouth in a kiss.

‘Condoms?’

The plural hadn’t been lost on her, and the frisson of heat between her legs sparked into a full flame. Fuuuuuuuuck.

‘Mmm-hmm …’ she replied, twining her arms around his neck and kissing him back. He was a damn good kisser. He had just the right mixture of confidence and skill, which made the butterflies in her tummy transform into crazy zings of lust and zoom wildly throughout her body.

The delicious feelings increased tenfold when Damien opened his lips and she felt his tongue try for access to her mouth. She gladly admitted it, and the hot caress of his tongue against hers caused a trickle of juices to slide from her pussy and soak into the gusset of her pants.

She was suddenly very glad she’d gone with her earlier instinct and worn not only matching, but very sexy lingerie. Not that she was going to be wearing it for much longer …

Annalise shuffled forwards, gently pushing him. Damien took the hint and they moved as one towards her bed, falling onto it with her on top. Just as she leaned down to kiss him again, he stopped her. Removing his glasses, he gave a wicked smile and asked her to put them down on her bedside table.

‘Don’t want them getting in the way, do we?’

Climbing off him, Annalise carefully deposited his glasses on the bedside table. Then, agreeing with Damien’s logic about things getting in the way, she quickly removed her earrings, necklace and bracelet. Finally, she opened her top drawer and retrieved a condom. Turning to face him once more, she saw that he’d moved so he was now positioned with his head on the pillows, and his hands behind his head, waiting. He raised his eyebrows.

‘Oh, I’m sorry,’ Annalise said, her voice dripping with sarcasm, ‘was I taking too long?’

‘Yes,’ Damien replied without hesitation. ‘Now come here.’

Annalise clambered across the bed and straddled Damien. She felt the bulge in his trousers pressing against her arse and wriggled against it. Dropping the condom on his chest, she said, ‘I think you’re going to be needing that.’

‘You think?’

‘Shut up and give me a kiss.’

‘With pleasure, ma’am.’

New Release: The Secret Library – Silk Stockings

Silk StockingsIt’s here, it’s here! Today is the official release date of my first ever novella, Off the Shelf, released as part of Xcite Books’ The Secret Library range. As you may be aware (I have been banging on about it rather a lot), it appears in the Silk Stockings book, along with novellas from Constance Munday and Jenna Bright (it’s Jenna’s first ever print publication, too!).

Here’s a reminder of what my story is all about:

At 35, travel writer Annalise is fed up with insensitive comments about being left on the shelf. It’s not as if she doesn’t want a man, but her busy career doesn’t leave her much time for relationships. Sexy liaisons with passing acquaintances give Annalise physical satisfaction, but she needs more than that. She wants a man who will satisfy her mind as well as her body. But where will she find someone like that? It seems Annalise may be in luck when a new member of staff starts working in the bookshop at the airport she regularly travels through. Damien appears to tick all the boxes; he’s gorgeous, funny and intelligent, and he shares Annalise’s love of books and travel. The trouble is, Damien’s shy and Annalise is terrified of rejection. Can they overcome their fears and admit their feelings, or are they doomed to remain on the shelf?

You can check out an excerpt of my novella on the book page, and also see buy links, which I’ll be updating as more become available. In the meantime, I’m waiting not-so-patiently for my author copies to turn up! I know I’ve already seen the book in the flesh at the London Book Fair, but I want my copies so I can stroke them in private ;)

I’m looking forward to reading the novella, too. That way I can reacquaint myself with my beloved Damien. Ahh… *swoons*

Congrats also go to Toni Sands, Elizabeth Coldwell and K D Grace as their book, Traded Innocence is also available today! In fact, K D Grace also releases her first novella from Mischief, too, so double congrats! ;)

London Hi-Jinks

I just spent a weekend in London, with an extension to go to the London Book Fair yesterday. Sightseeing stuff included a visit to Churchill’s War Rooms and Museum, a mooch around Fortnum & Mason, peering at The Ritz, visiting (and purchasing from) Choccywoccydoodah, a wander through Soho and Chinatown, and of course popping into a couple of book shops.

London Book Fair stuff included meeting up with lovely ladies Jenna Bright and Kitti Bernetti and checking out our gorgeous new books on the Xcite Books stand before heading off to chat and explore the rest of the enormous venue.

The Secret LibraryThe Secret Library - Silk StockingsLucy & The Secret Library

It was a fab day, with lots of chat, including The Secret Library (of course!), Smut by the Sea (the anthology and event), Smut in the City, The Book Show and much more. I also came home with a ton of books from the ladies at Ellora’s Cave, and some from Harlequin, too!

I also managed to scare a bloke on a stand when he asked what I wrote. He tried to appear unruffled when I answered, but admitted it was the best answer to that question that he’d had all day! ;)

I’m still awaiting my author copies of Silk Stockings, but the book is available (or coming very soon) to stockists, so check out the links here.

New Release: Desperate Measures Edited by Elizabeth Coldwell

Desperate MeasuresI’m happy to announce another new release! This time, I’m appearing in an eBook anthology from Xcite Books, called Desperate Measures. My story is the title story, and it’s about a woman who was made redundant from her job and finds a very interesting way to earn a little more cash.

Here’s a snippet from the story:

Recession. Credit crunch. Inflation. Poppy was fed up of hearing the words. She didn’t need to keep seeing the news reports to know the depressing truth. She – and many other people besides – was broke. Before the financial crisis hit, Poppy had been doing just fine. Really well, actually. She’d had a great job as a project manager with a firm that worked with chain supermarkets. Granted, it meant there were occasional late-night phone calls she’d had to deal with, but the money had been good enough that the interruptions were worth it. The nice house, car, and luxurious holidays had also kept her smiling through the busy periods when she was ready to rip some incompetent contractor’s head off.

Unfortunately, money problems had affected everyone and made them tighten their belts, including the supermarkets. As a result, Poppy was out of a job. Various schemes she’d paid into over the years ensured that she still had a roof over her head, thankfully, but the luxuries she’d previously enjoyed were no longer an option.

Naturally, she’d thrown herself into job hunting as soon as she’d found out she was being made redundant. But people with her skill set and experience were expensive and companies were getting rid of expensive and not-absolutely-necessary people, not taking them on.
The monthly repayments on her mortgage were high and while she was on jobseeker’s allowance they were being paid for her. Poppy was no snob, but she couldn’t afford to take just any job because as soon as she became employed again, the insurance company would stop paying her mortgage. Therefore, if her new job paid a lot less than her previous one, she’d end up even worse off than she was now. Poppy had a serious dilemma. If only she could find a way to earn some extra cash while she was looking for a job, then she wouldn’t have to dip into her hard-earned savings.

One evening, as she surfed job websites looking for possible roles, Poppy sat back in her chair and sighed with resignation. Her search was proving fruitless, and it was really beginning to get her down. But then, as her gaze landed on the gadget hooked on to the top of her computer monitor, her eyes narrowed and inspiration hit. She snapped back to the screen and began frantically Googling. A little while later, Poppy’s genius plan was in action.

See the book page for the other authors in the anthology, and where you can bag yourself a copy.

Eroticon 2012 – What Really Happened

Eroticon2012

It was 5.30am when my alarm went off, resulting in a “Uhhhnnnerrr!” type noise from me. I am sooo not a morning person. However, I was getting up early for a good reason – it was time for Eroticon 2012! It seemed like it had been in my diary for ages and that the date would never arrive – but it did. So off I went to the train station for my 6.59am train, convinced I’d forgotten something, and terrified that I’d fall asleep on the first train and miss my connection, which would have left me stranded in Reading. However, I needn’t have worried. Fear kept me awake, and I successfully changed trains at Birmingham New Street, where I found Victoria Blisse and we settled in and nattered the entire way to Bristol Temple Meads train station (which, if you’re interested in that kind of thing, is a beautiful building). A quick taxi ride took us to Armada House, and then it was time for the day to begin!

We got there without too much time to spare before the first panel, and so after dumping our bags and grabbing our name tags and goodie bags, there was only time for quick hellos to Paul and Matt from House of Erotica, Kay Jaybee, K D Grace, Hazel Cushion and some others I’m sure I’ve forgotten before heading into the main room for the official conference welcome.  Then it was time to check out the day’s schedule (which I’m glad I did, because it had been updated since I’d last printed it out!) and decide where to go, and when. Here’s a rundown of the panels/sessions I attended:

Going indie, self-publishing by MK Elliott

Although I’ve already self-published some titles, I certainly don’t profess to know everything, and so happily attended this session to find out what MK Elliott had to say. I’m very glad I did. Naturally there was information that I knew already, but there were some things I didn’t, and of course it’s always useful to hear other  people’s experiences of things. MK Elliott was confident, knowledgeable and highlighted the main points of her talk with a PowerPoint presentation. She also happily answered questions and I came away feeling as though I’d learned something – and conversations with other attendees confirmed that they did, too.

Writing Workshop by Maxim Jakubowski

From the title of this session, I was expecting that we’d be doing something interactive and hands on, and so had my notebook and pen at the ready. Instead, this was a discussion led by Maxim which covered his career, the different genres he writes in, censorship and many more topics which affect the erotica and erotic romance writing genre. There were many questions from the audience, which he answered fully and usefully, and although as I said, the session wasn’t what I expected, it was certainly informative and interesting.

Convincingly Queer with Aisling Weaver and Josephine Myles

This was probably my favourite session of the day (with the exception of mine, of course!). Aisling and Josephine ran a session on how to write stories about things that you don’t necessarily have any experience of. For example, if you’re a different gender, sexuality or have different kinks. This included tying up and blindfolding members of the audience, discussing research methods and books, figuring out if certain pieces of writing were penned by men or women, and much more! It was a fun, laid back session and I came away with plenty of food for thought!

Publishers’ Panel with Maxim Jakubowski, Hazel Cushion, Monique Roffey, Paul Andrews and Richard Eadie

This was a lively panel with publishers and published authors – as well as people who have stradded both sides of that particular fence. Ruby started with asking some questions that had previously been sent to her, then it was opened up to the floor. Topics covered included what publishers would like to see more of (Victorian spanking, unusual fetishes), some chat on the PayPal debacle and how they’re censoring what people can read, whether you should write for the market or write what you want to write, whether erotica writers should use pseudonyms and more. There were some varying opinions, which made for interesting viewing, and again, I came away with lots to think about.

Marketing your Work with Lucy Felthouse and Victoria Blisse

Ah… yes. That would be me. Victoria and I dashed upstairs after the Publishers’ Panel to get set up for our session, desperately hoping that we’d get a good turn out, particularly as we were at the same time as two other sessions. Much to our relief, by the time we’d sorted out the laptop and projector, got our presentation up on screen and marvelled at the fact it had a remote control, the room was filling rapidly. That worry over, we waited patiently for any stragglers, then began. As marketing and promotion is such a huge topic, we couldn’t cover everything, so we centred in on blog tours, with me providing the “marketer” side of things, and Victoria filling in from the “author” perspective. There was lots of nodding and taking notes from the audience, then we opened up questions. The audience didn’t want to talk at first, but once they started, they didn’t want to stop! Luckily, Victoria and I were well equipped to handle the questions and there was some interesting discussion before we had to wrap it up. Not, however, before we gave a pimp to the Smut by the Sea anthology and encouraged people to come and grab some business cards! I had a few people express interest in my services (don’t be rude, I’m talking PR & Marketing here), as well as meeting some people that I’d chatted to via email and even worked for without ever having met them! I felt it was a really positive session and would definitely do it again. So, Ruby, if you want a similar session for Eroticon 2013, you know where I am! ;) Also, special thanks go to Victoria Blisse for being my partner in crime. You rock.

Sacred Kink with London Fairie and Lori Smith

This was a spanking demonstration set to music. Honestly, I’m not sure what else to say about it. It was an eye-opening, new experience which resulted in Lori Smith getting a very red bottom, and sparked lots of questions and comments from the audience. I came away having seen something new.

Drinks Party

Much to my disappointment, the author readings were cancelled due to timing, but the raffle draw went ahead. Attendees won sex furniture, sex toys, vouchers, and lots of lots of books. Ruby then closed with a heartfelt thank you to the sponsors, speakers and attendees. Unfortunately for me, the only alcohol on hand was wine, so I was ready by this point to go out and eat and nab myself some vodka, which was soon remedied.

The After Party

Ah, the “after parties” are often my favourite parts of such get togethers. It means we all get to chat about things in general and get to know one another. Sadly, as we left the venue a couple of the original party dropped out due to illness or having to get home, but myself, Victoria Blisse, Lily Harlem, K D Grace, Jacqueline Brocker, Josephine Myles and Maxim Jakubowski soldiered on and ended up in Gourmet Burger Kitchen where we ate a delicious meal and probably had people listening to our conversation. I don’t blame them. We were talking about all facets of erotic fiction, sex furniture, reviews, publishers, pseudonyms, the difference in the US and UK markets, and much more.

On leaving the restaurant, myself, Victoria Blisse, K D Grace, Lily Harlem and Josephine Myles headed back to our hotel – where we’d been told there was a 24 hour bar. This wasn’t strictly true (apparently only soft drinks were 24 hour), but we managed to get in a few swift drinks before Josephine had to leave. And then there were four. Since we were all staying in the same place, we didn’t have to worry about getting anywhere other than to our rooms, so when a very loud, drunk moron started singing at the top of his voice in the bar, we went up to mine and Victoria’s room and continued the conversation. I won’t divulge all of our girly chat, but needless to say we talked lots about writing, the industry, future plans, and more. So beware – we’re planning to take over the world! ;)

We finally fell into bed around 2.30am (separate beds, before you get all excited), and due to more loud, drunk morons I couldn’t sleep right away, but I finally dozed off until around 8am when it was time to have breakfast and hit the road. I had a lonely train journey this time, so I plotted a novella on the train up to Birmingham New Street, where my beloved picked me up (though not before me dashing into WHSmith’s and seeing K D Grace’s The Initiation of Ms Holly and Explicit Encounters, which contains one of my stories, on sale) and took me home.

I fell into bed very early and slept like a log. Today, though, I find the events and information swirling around my head, and keep grinning when I remember certain things – particularly some of the late night girly conversation and plans for the future. I met so many new people (and spent more time with people I already knew) that I can’t possibly name them all, but if you’re reading this and we met and chatted – hello! :D I hope you had as good a time as I did.

It was a fab weekend – and I can’t wait until the next one! ;) Thanks and well done to Ruby Kiddell for pulling it all together!

P.S. I was so busy that I didn’t end up taking any photos, but the professional photographer will be supplying them to Ruby very soon, so check out the official website or Twitter feed for more information.

What a Weekend!

This weekend was always going to be a fun one. Two erotica-related events were afoot: the More Bang Reading Slam on Friday night at Sh! Portobello, and K D Grace’s book launch for Body Temperature and Rising on Saturday night at Sh! Hoxton. Sounds good already, right? Well, let’s just say it far exceeded expectations.

Friday

My OH and I dashed into our London hotel, got ready then headed out to Portobello, complete with delicious cupcakes (made by my OH, not by me). There was just time for a quick drink in the pub with Lexie Bay and her OH, then it was time for the main event! Hosted by K D Grace and Sarah Berry, the event had several aims:

  • To be a fun smutty evening
  • A way for several erotic writers and poets to showcase their work
  • To raise some cash for a worthy charity

Reading from Immoral ViewsAll these aims were achieved, and then some! Each reading was timed at five minutes, and woe betide any reader that should go over the time limit – Ms. Kay Jaybee was on hand with a spanking paddle to punish any wrongdoers!

We were treated to prose, poetry and performance from the following:

  • Kay Jaybee (a super rendition from her naughty anthology, The Collector)
  • Lexie Bay (a smutty yet humorous snippet from her story, Taken with Consent, from Uniform Behaviour)
  • Yours Truly (I read out a dirty bit from my story Caught in the Act, from Immoral Views)
  • The Dragon King’s Daughter (a super piece of poetry about masturbation)
  • Liz Coldwell (a yummy m/m snippet from her novella, Stranded in Paradise)
  • Annie Player (two poems – one nice, and one deliciously naughty)
  • Sarah Berry (a totally filthy rewrite of the old song, All that Jazz. I’ll just tell you she retitled it All that Jizz and leave the rest to your imagination. ;) )
  • Janine Ashbless (a kinky snippet from her newly released vampire novel, Red Grow the Roses)
  • Ernesto Sarezale (a funny yet sexy poem read in his yummy accent, with some undressing thrown in – can’t be bad!)
  • Lynn Mann (who treated us to a deliciously dark reading from a friend’s work)
  • Meg Philip (a deeply naughty snippet from a true story – so good that she consented to be spanked just so we could hear what happened next!)

It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, I got to meet some people in the flesh that I’d only ever corresponded with via email, and some completely new people. That, coupled with spending some time with my writing buddies, made for a splendid evening. And yet, there was more to come….

Saturday

After a day pounding London’s pavements, OH and I did another zip across London, got cleaned up at headed to Sh! Hoxton. Another sneaky drink was had in the Bluu Bar next door, before nabbing seats in the pink palace of Sh!, ready for K D Grace’s launch. And… what a launch! There was more fizz, more cupcakes (though unsurprisingly, the ones my OH made disappeared the night before – no leftovers!), goodies, and great company. Much of the crowd from Friday’s festivities were there, and my buddy Victoria Blisse and her lovely hubby also joined us – so it was a smut fest indeed!

K D treated us to several snippets from her novel, Body Temperature and Rising, as well as running a raffle, doing a Q&A and showing off some superb artwork – three artists had created pieces of work based on scenes from the book.

All in all, it was another successful evening. The Sh! Ladiez were awesome, the venue was fab and K D was signing books left, right and centre!

We then mooched over to a restaurant nearby to continue the festivities. Much chat and laughter ensued, but, as is always the case, time runs away with us and it was time to head back to our hotels for the evening.

I’m not quite as sad as usual to leave my writing buddies. Want to know why? Because I’ll see most of them again this weekend at Eroticon 2012! Let more smut and silliness ensue!

And there’s more!

Yes – it’s a wonder I haven’t exploded because on top of all that excitement, I’ve also had a super review of my spooky lesbian tale, Weekend at Wilderhope Manor, appeared on the FRONT COVER of Safeword Magazine and gained a silver star on All Romance eBooks for my new release, The Cottage in the Woods, as well as getting a fab first review of the same book!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to squeeeeee in the corner. Yes, I said squee. ;)
