Salem’s Lot – Stephen King
I’m not into scary stuff usually, but I can always make an exception for the legend that is Stephen King.
I also started reading this thinking it may give me some good ideas for my own writing. I started the book expecting to be scared right from the beginning. I was sorely disappointed. It seemed to take ages to warm up, the only thing that scared me was the front cover of the book, and even that wore off after a while.
That’s not to say I didn’t like it. Once I really got into it, I enjoyed it. It was more spooky than scary, and I was disappointed to find that the supposed ‘twist’ in the tale, I’d sussed out some time ago. I don’t know if this is because I’ve read so many books and watched so many films that I can just guess what’s going to happen, though.
It’s gory in places, depending on the strength of your imagination, and of course, mine is pretty vivid. The plot is well thought out, and the ending does hold a slight twist that you wouldn’t expect.
All in all, I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a bit of a fright, or anyone that enjoys Stephen King or vampire stories. He’s a fabulous writer, but this isn’t one of his best.
