Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em
I don’t remember when I was first ‘introduced’ to Frank Spencer and his madcap ways – I was too young. But I always remember thinking that he was really funny, and if an episode of Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em was on the TV, then I’d always watch it. As I got older, I found them even more humorous as I ‘got’ some of the jokes that in my innocence (yes, I was innocent once) would have totally bypassed me. And now I’m hooked.
When I saw all of the episodes were available as a box set, I just had to have it. People may think it’s unusual that someone of my age would rather watch a show that was first shown on TV before I was born that some of the modern stuff. But this show is a classic and I love it. It’s got none of the special effects of today’s shows, and it doesn’t need crimes, deaths, affairs and teenage pregnancies to make it compelling viewing. It’s just pure and simple comedy; a show about the life of a good, but completely deranged simpleton and his long-suffering (and also not that bright) wife. Of course, some of the scenes are pretty unrealistic, but I think it’s that which makes it so funny. And I never get bored of watching them – the episodes are just so silly, and I think Frank Spencer’s “Ooo Betty!” catchphrase has already gone down in history and will continue to be used in conversation for years to come.
If you too, were born after this show was filmed but have no idea what I’m talking about, seriously, give it a try. If you like silly, slapstick humour – you will love Frank Spencer. Never fails to make me laugh.
