Chastity FlameLush SituationA Cut-Throat Business

Continuing our theme of cops and robbers (surely secret agents count?)

C. Margery Kempe wanted it noted for the record that Chastity Flame started out as her sexy book and then it became K. A. Laity‘s book and now this third one has almost no sex at all! Okay, there’s some but a lot of it takes place off screen, so to speak. It’s mostly a break-neck thriller. There’s a terrible killer at large, but there’s also a dangerous ex-colleague who wants to knock off Chas—and perhaps most terrifying of all for the wildly free and sexy secret agent, there’s moving in with her former colleague-now-history professor Damien.

He’s hot.

She’s not exactly a cop, but Chastity is one of the people who protect us that we never see. This guy she’s after is really bad news. So what’s this killer like? Here’s a snippet from the opening chapter–

Daddy’s girl. That’s what she’d always been. As she sprinted down the dark street, the phrase kept repeating in her head. Her heart beat a tattoo in her chest and her lungs burned as she raced along. Adrenaline filled her veins as she sought a way out, away from this, but she could still hear his footsteps behind her.

Daddy’s girl. He had grinned as he said the words, onto her wavelength, her weakness, in just a few minutes of conversation. She had actually been pleased. He was smarter than they usually were, the men who fluttered around her like moths to a flame. She always found it easy to charm them, to make them desire her.

You’d hardly believe she had once been a plain tomboy. Her well-toned legs might be a legacy of that time, though exercise these days meant helping her maintain the look that turned heads. Right then she wished she’d worked more on pure endurance instead of shapeliness because his seemingly tireless steps got closer as she grew tired.

She skidded around a corner and her terror exploded. It was a dead end. Panicking, her gaze darted back and forth, looking for some break in the brick walls that lined the narrow lane. With a glance over her shoulder she stumbled forward into a ragged trot, eyes wild as she hoped there must be a way out of this. Someplace to hide would appear, like it always did in bad dreams, in movies, just when there was no more hope. Then a bin or a box would be there where you hadn’t noticed and behind it a narrow passage that led to freedom.

Her heart raced faster as the sound of his footfalls came closer.

Bricks, bricks, more bricks: up too high, a few windows with broken glass. If she had wings, a rocket, a fiery dragon—her thoughts were getting wild, hysterical. Isn’t that the word they always used, the word only for women? She had such contempt for her gender. She had felt hunger and contempt in equal measures for men, those she desired and those who desired her.

He paused at the entrance to the narrow lane, staring at her. Earlier she had preened as his interest became plain, but now she wished she had never seen him.

“Come to daddy,” he growled in an obscene parody of the fatherly approval she craved.

There had to be some way out! She ran to the far wall, overly conscious of her own panting breaths. Her fingertips scraped against the bricks on vain, her overheated brain suggesting that there could be some kind of secret exit if she applied the right pressure. What was that movie where the bricks moved and opened, revealing a secret alley? When she realised it was one of the Harry Potter movies a giggle began in the back of her throat.

This is what it’s like to be hysterical.

Her giggles grew. No wonder they said a joke was hysterical when it was good. She stiffened when she heard his step so close behind her. The giggles becoming little gasps. She sank to the ground, hands up in a defensive posture.

“Now, now. This won’t do.” He grabbed her hand and yanked her to her feet…

The Magic of the Serpentine

The magic of Kensington Gardens—home of Peter Pan—may be well known, but its adjacent neighbour, The Serpentine, may be less so. It got a big boost during the Olympics because the Triathalon began there.

Go Brownlees!

The Swan PrinceI set the opening of The Swan Prince there even though the initial spark of the idea came to me in Galway. Living in the west coast town you just can’t miss the swans everywhere you go. They rule the city! And don’t they know it, too. They pose for pictures or else sail regally up the Corrib.

The Serpentine is a more tame sort of place than Ireland’s wild coast, but it seems the perfect place for a swan prince in exile. After all it was created by the wish of Queen Caroline back in the 18th century. Although artificial, royal gardener Charles Bridgeman created it to appear natural.

In the 19th century the lake got a new notoriety when the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley’s pregnant first wife drowned herself in its waters. He married Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin just a couple weeks later. That tragedy was just one of several that coloured the mind who created the immortal Frankenstein.

The Serpentine is the border between the magic of Kensington Park and the more brisk busyness of Hyde Park, with its Speaker’s Corner and horse paths. As you cross over the Serpentine Bridge, it offers a moment of contemplation. The boaters dot its surface offering Londoners and tourists alike a little oasis of gentle fun in the midst of the bustling city.

And if you haven’t enjoyed the café at the water’s edge, you just haven’t had one of the nicest treats in London.

Here’s a little snippet of the novelette, where Lena and Charles head to the café after he dramatically rescues her brother Freddy from the waters:

Lena smiled and turned to the young man trying to dry his clothes with the rough blanket. “Can I buy you a tea and cake? And maybe you’ll tell me your name?”

When he laughed, Lena admired the easy smile he gave her, the deep blue eyes and the fine, strong features of his face. The startling white stripe in his hair didn’t appear to be any indication of age, for his face looked as young as her own.

“Charles Downing.” He shook her hand. Even chilled by the waters of the Serpentine, the warmth of his grasp and the feeling of his skin against hers, sent familiar feelings shooting through her. His gaze held hers. Then they both flushed and looked away from each other. What is this? Lena thought.

And with a grave seriousness, he turned his gaze to her brother and said, “Pleased to meet you, Freddy.”

“Let’s have cakes!” Freddy exclaimed, nearly tripping over his blanket and immediately dragging his new friend toward the café. Charles grinned back at Lena and allowed himself to be jerked along.

“Freddy, don’t pull on Charles like that. He doesn’t even know you.”

“It’s all right, really.” He laughed again.

Charles’s voice had a wonderful warm tone that caused little vibrations along Lena’s skin, waking her senses. Oh my. She laughed, too. She found it rare to be so instantly at ease with someone, and so fascinated. It had been so long since she had felt that frisson of instant fascination—and attraction.

Freddy jumped up and down at the counter, demanding hot chocolate and cake. Charles wanted to demur from anything, but Lena insisted he at least have a coffee. “If only to drive away the chill,” she said with mock seriousness.

They sipped their hot drinks and chatted between outbursts from Freddy, who saw the need to name everything he could in the café. In no time at all, Lena confessed her despair about her joblessness and Charles offered a sympathetic ear.

“You moan that your life is so dull and then when something catastrophic occurs, you realise just how good things had been.” He sighed and looked away.

“Ah, you too?” Lena watched the faraway look in Charles’ eyes. A shadow crossed his face, as if a storm had blown in from the coast. “I’m glad I have my folks to rely on, but it’s a bit miserable feeling, as if I have no say-so in my own life.”

Charles gave her a rueful smile. “I no longer have family to protect me. I suppose I should be happy enough on my own, but I envy your safety net.”

Lena put a hand over his. “How awful to be on your own!”

Charles shrugged, but he didn’t remove his hand from under hers. “We do what we can with the fate we’ve been handed.”

“Why don’t you come to tea?” Lena asked, surprising even herself with the sudden inspiration. “We can always add one more place.” Don’t push, Lena, maybe he has a girl friend. Or boyfriend. Or somewhere to be.

Charles smiled, but with regret. “I can’t do that. But tomorrow . . . would you like to meet up for lunch?”

Lena balanced her initial regret against this new possibility. “Sure. Where shall we meet?”

“Peter Pan?”

Lena grinned. If there were anything that could make this handsome man even more appealing to her it would be a fondness for Pan and his statue, her favourite spot in Kensington Park.

“What time?”

Readings and Reviews

Lucy Felthouse and C. Margery KempeLeicester Library was the place to be yesterday as there was an evening of smut! Yes, C. Margery Kempe and I took to the floor to read erotica in a library. Due to (we suspect) some prudish people not passing on information, the crowd was not large, but it was attentive – and you can’t ask for more than that!

Hoping to give myself some time to get over the nerves, I let (read: made) C. Margery read first. She entertained us with an excerpt from her erotic spy thriller novel, Chastity Flame. The fabulous humour and naughtiness had the audience eating from the palm of her hand and I must confess that the book has definitely made its way higher up my to be read list having heard juicy excerpts.

Next, I raised a few sniggers myself by reading a snippet from Fantasy Assignment, which features in my recently released collection, The Best of Lucy Felthouse. In my quest to avoid saying too many naughty words in public I read the introduction and stopped just before it got too saucy, but I’m hoping it left the story at enough of a cliffhanger that the listeners will go and search up the book to find out what happens next! I did, of course, reassure the audience that there was plenty of erotic action in the rest of the book.

A passage from fairy tale retelling Love Me Like A Reptile came next from Ms. Kempe. Another hilarious snippet of a story which raised some very odd questions about frogs during the Q&A…

We hadn’t planned it, but following C Margery’s paranormal tale was one of my paranormal tales, Bite With Height. I read the introduction to this f/f erotic romance tale set in Paris. I then left the audience on another cliffhanger.

A Q&A session followed – and the best part is it was all podcasted by the lovely Adele of Un:Bound Blogzine, who also arranged the whole evening – so a big thank you to her! 🙂 So as soon as I receive the file/s, I’ll be able to include here so you can have a listen for yourselves. But rest assured there was odd conversation about frogs, paranormal writing, getting turned on while writing and much more…

On another topic, I had the first review in this morning for The Best of Lucy Felthouse, and it’s a good ‘un! Sizzling Hot Books gave it a four out of five score, and commented:

“Overall, The Best of Lucy Felthouse is a great read. It has five stories all in different areas. It offers every reader a different tale of seduction or erotica. I would recommend The Best of Lucy Felthouse to erotica readers. Fans of Lucy’s won’t be disappointed with The Best of Lucy Felthouse.”

I’m happy with that! 🙂
