Mid Week Tease: There was a chance the bubbly could be poisoned… #MWTease

mid-week-tease-buttonHi everyone,

Welcome back to Mid Week Tease! Here’s another tease from my new novel, Hiding in Plain Sight. Things are hotting up… and I’ll be moving onto something else next week, so if you want to find out what happens next, you know what to do šŸ˜‰

Hiding in Plain Sightā€œA-and you,ā€ she forced out, fighting to get a grip on her emotions. It wasnā€™t at all like her to be so affected by someone, but in a bizarre twist of fate, the very fact that heā€™d surprised her, had surprised her. During her years in the service, sheā€™d seen so many things, so many facets to human nature, that it was nigh on impossible to surprise, shock or faze her. She made a mental note to watch this man carefully. She hadnā€™t got any vibes from him to indicate that he was anything other than an attractive barman and waiter, but it was entirely possible she wasnā€™t the only intelligence officer watching the gang. Their activities were widespread, after all. Any number of countries could be keeping an eye on them, trying to bring them down. And not all of them would necessarily want to team up with the British in order to do so. The Brits had as many enemies as they did allies.

ā€œSo!ā€ she said brightly, crossing over to the sofa, deliberately exaggerating the wiggle of her hips and bottom as she walked, hoping to distract him from her moment of being flustered. ā€œIt was very good of you to bring champagne. Shall we?ā€

Erasmus had followed her over to the seating area, and inclined his head, then reached for the bottle. With finesse born of frequent practice, or possibly he was an exceptional actor, he opened the bottle, snagged a glass and filled it, before handing it to her with a grin.

ā€œThank you.ā€ She smiled back, waiting until heā€™d poured his own drink before even thinking of taking a sip. There was a chance the bubbly could be poisoned, or drugged. It irritated her immensely that she had to even take such precautions, to consider that everyone she met could be out to get her, but it was an instinct that had saved her life on more than one occasion. Besides, it was ingrained so deeply within her that sheā€™d never shake it. Sheā€™d probably still be looking over her shoulder when she was old and grey, and long-retired from the intelligence game.

Fortunately, Erasmus didnā€™t seem to find anything odd in this behaviour. Instead, after filling his champagne flute, he took the seat opposite her, then leaned forward, holding out his glass. ā€œTo new friends,ā€ he said, tipping her a wink.

More Than Words – A Guest Post by Becky Flade (@beckyflade)

I started high school in September 1990 [edited to correct a typo that had me starting high school in 1900], a time when hair rock ruled absolutely. I had the concert rigged lighter ā€“ that on more than one occasion set my Aqua Net brick of teased out bangs on fire ā€“ and a denim jacket with all the lyrics to Civil War printed on it in black sharpie.

Close to twenty-five years later, I walked down the aisle to a piano solo of GnRā€™s seminal November Rain. We didnā€™t realize at the time that we were accidentally recreating the video, that bulb didnā€™t light until we were on our honeymoon, but we didnā€™t care.

A Love RestrainedA Love Restrained, my new romantic suspense releasing October 4th, though set in present day Philadelphia, involves the romance between a good girl and a bad boy who harbored crushes on the other from afar in high school during the first half of the 90ā€™s. They reunite under the most of unlikely of circumstances and find a mature love that endures the deadliest of secrets. It only felt right to mainline the music of their teen years [and mine] while I wrote, and while I edited, and as a result there are references, subtle and overt, throughout the book.

Sadly digital remasters donā€™t have the same sound, the same glory, the same character, vinyl did. And I miss sitting for hours beside the radio, tape queued up, waiting for that *one* song to play so I could hit record. God, I wish I had some of those mix tapes now. But the music holds up. I found old favorites I hadnā€™t heard in years. And goofy crap that still makes me smile and sway my hips like Miley Cyrus partying in the USA.

Everything about A Love Restrained is my very own personal love letter, to my husband, my youth, the city Iā€™ve always called my home, and the music that provided the soundtrack to my adolescence.

A few favorites:

More Than Words

Heaven

High Enough

Close My Eyes Forever

Every Rose Has Its Thorn

I want to put together a power ballad playlist for the book on my youtube channel. Help me? Share with me, Lucy and her fans the name of your favorite power ballad in the comments below and Iā€™ve got a free book for a randomly drawn commenter. Good luck and party on!

About the book:

Philadelphia police officer Kylee Parker is dedicated to protecting and serving. She sees the work in absolutes: right and wrong, black and white, good guys and bad guys. That is, until she chases a drug dealer into a dead-end alley and finds the bad boy she had a painful crush on throughout her teen years has turned into a more dangerous and more attractive man.

Jayson Donovan knows he doesnā€™t deserve someone as good as Kylee Parker. As the right hand man to a local drug-pushing mobster, heā€™s solidly on the wrong side of Kyleeā€™s moral compass. But he canā€™t help reaching for her time and again when he knows he shouldnā€™t.

Even when his secrets threaten them both.

Mid Week Tease: His lips were warm and dry… #MWTease

mid-week-tease-buttonHi everyone,

Welcome back to Mid Week Tease! Here’s another tease from my new novel, Hiding in Plain Sight. I was away on holiday in Wales last week, so I didn’t take part, but I’m back now. I’ll probably do a couple more teases from this book before moving onto something else.

Hiding in Plain Sightā€œYouā€¦ā€ His expression turned uncomfortable, much to Malloryā€™s confusion, and he fixed his attention on the plush carpet. ā€œYou will forgive meā€¦ it seems silly in the circumstances, butā€¦ I donā€™t know your name.ā€

Mallory clapped a hand over her mouth, hoping heā€™d see it as a gesture of surprise, rather than her covering up her amusement at her faux pas. Sheā€™d been so focused on the task at hand, spying on the gang she was here to infiltrate, that she hadnā€™t been fully concentrating on her flirtation with the handsome waiter.

Hoping sheā€™d rearranged her features into an appropriate expression, she removed her hand from her mouth and took a step towards him. ā€œIā€™m so sorry, Erasmus. It completely slipped my mind. My name is Bea Winchester.ā€ The lie tripped off her tongue so easily that she was sure even a fellow intelligence officer would believe her. But as much as she disliked lying to Erasmusā€”he was, after all, nothing to do with her reason for being here; rather a pleasant diversion along the wayā€”it was essential to maintain her cover. Plus, if curiosity got the better of him at any point, heā€™d easily be able to check the hotelā€™s computer system and discover what name she had checked in under.

He closed the gap between them still further, and held out his hand. ā€œItā€™s very nice to meet you, Bea Winchester.ā€

She took his hand, then was surprised when, instead of shaking, he gently twisted her wrist and bent to place a kiss on her knuckles. His lips were warm and dry, and her astonishment at his action swiftly gave way to arousal as he lingered there for a few moments, before releasing her.

Mid Week Tease: “I’m glad you made it.” #MWTease

mid-week-tease-buttonHi everyone,

Welcome back to Mid Week Tease! Here’s another tease from my new novel, Hiding in Plain Sight. I hope you’ll check it out – this book is getting some really great feedback!

Hiding in Plain SightMallory wasnā€™t the slightest bit surprised when the knock came at her hotel room door. Although sheā€™d been subtle, simply scrawling her room number on an old receipt sheā€™d fished from her handbag and leaving it on the table in the bar, it had still been a blatant invitation. Particularly since her drink had been on the house, therefore giving no reason for it to be charged to her room.

Sheā€™d figured if Erasmus was smart enough to get the hint, then he deserved to get laid. If not, well then it was his loss, wasnā€™t it? A man wasnā€™t a necessity for her. If she felt the need to get off, then her right hand would serve the purpose perfectly well.

Moving from her position by the window, where sheā€™d been standing admiring the view of the city, she headed for the door. She made sure her silky robe was in position as she walked. Just because sheā€™d basically issued an invitation for him to visit her room for sex, didnā€™t mean she wanted to look desperate, or as though sheā€™d been waiting for him.

Peeping through the spy-holeā€”someone in her profession could never be too carefulā€”she smiled when she saw her visitor was, in fact, the very one sheā€™d been expecting. Keeping the smile on her face, she opened the door and immediately stood back to let him in. It wouldnā€™t do for him to be seen loitering outside. She wanted to screw him, not get him into trouble for consorting with the guests.

Clearly getting her drift, Erasmus glanced up and down the corridor before stepping over the threshold into her room. Apparently he was smart, because heā€™d brought a bottle of champagne and two glasses with him, having the twin bonuses of being his excuse for his presence in her room if anyone had seen him, and alsoā€¦ well, champagne was just always a good idea.

ā€œHi,ā€ she said in his native language, closing the door behind him. ā€œIā€™m glad you made it.ā€

He was halfway across the room when he tossed his reply over his shoulder. ā€œHi. Yes, me too. Itā€™s been anā€¦ interesting day.ā€ Placing the bottle and glasses down on the coffee table, he then turned to face her, the sexual interest obvious on his face as he took in her appearance. ā€œI was very glad to find yourā€¦ invitation.ā€

ā€œAnd Iā€™m pleased you accepted it.ā€

Mid Week Tease: Her grin grew wider. #MWTease

mid-week-tease-buttonHi everyone,

Welcome back to Mid Week Tease! Here’s another tease from my new novel, Hiding in Plain Sight. I hope you’ll check it out – this book is getting some really great feedback!

Hiding in Plain SightKeeping her eyes wide, she replied, ā€œOh, thank you, Erasmus. I hope itā€™s okay to call you that. I really didnā€™t mean to be a difficult customer, itā€™s justā€¦ā€ she tailed off with a shrug.

Erasmus gave a quaint bow. ā€œYou are not the difficult customer, madam. You have been a pleasure. And of course itā€™s okay to call me Erasmus. Please, if there is anything else you require, do not hesitate to let me know. I will be pleased to assist you.ā€ He smiled, then turned and walked away.

Admiring the view of his backside until it disappeared out of sight behind the bar, Mallory grinned. Unless sheā€™d been completely mistaken, thereā€™d been a glint in his eye, and emphasis on the anything part. When sheā€™d figured he might come in useful at some point, sheā€™d been thinking along the lines of maybe pumping him for information, or potentially using him to gain access to areas of the hotel she wasnā€™t supposed to be in. But the more she thought about it, the more she leaned towards him being the perfect candidate for a little extra-curricular fun. Her target, whoever he turned out to be, was off-limits for the time being, at least. It sounded like he and his friends were about to be escorted from the bar, and given the amount of alcohol theyā€™d consumed, theyā€™d all be drunk for the next few hours at least, then hungover for several more hours after that.

Giving Mallory plenty of time to become more familiar with the layout of the hotel and its operations. Not to mention the members of staff.

One in particular.

Her grin grew wider.
