Escaping the king’s harem, Lahna finds herself at the mercy of a warrior prince who holds her captive and makes no secret of his desire to have her. Lahna hasn’t fled from one tyrant only to become the captive of another, and she certainly has no intention of warming the bed of the fearsome prince…even if he does make her body burn and her senses reel.

Caelan suspects his voluptuous captive may have been sent to spy on him and discover his plans to liberate his land from the tyrannical rule of the king. But her arrival provides him with the perfect opportunity to set those plans in motion. First, that means making her his, and in doing so he might just satisfy the craving for her that heats his blood and fires his loins.

But can Caelan really trust her? And can Lahna trust him to keep her safe when it matters most?

He had markings on his skin, the type that were forbidden by the king. What looked like intricate black ribbons circled his muscled upper left arm. He also had scars along his right arm, the kind made by weapons of battle.

He caught her staring at him and she looked away, sipping at the water again.

“You find something of interest?”

She swallowed before glancing back at him. “You are not what I expected.”

His expression darkened and a tension moved into his big body. “Indeed. And what did you expect?”

At the coldness in his eyes, Lahna reached for her inner strength and all the bravado she could muster. “You wear the marks of battle and your hair is long.”

His gaze held hers, searching for some hidden answer for which she didn’t know the question. Then he leaned closer. “Before anything else, I am a warrior. You would do well to remember that.”

She pushed her head back into the pillow as he leaned farther down. When her stomach pitched again, she wondered at the wisdom of eating too much bread. Except this feeling didn’t feel like over-indulgence.

Only when he straightened did she breathe once more.

“What is the name by which you are known?”

What kind of game was he playing? Of course he knew her name. “Lahna,” she sneered, lifting her chin.

He said nothing, but narrowed his blue gaze directly at her.

She wouldn’t be intimidated. “How long am I to remain here?”

“As long as you wish.”

“As I wish?”

Pointedly, he looked around him. “Do you see locks on the doors? Bars on the windows?”

No, she didn’t, come to think of it. At least, none that were visible. But was it a ploy? Was he trying to lull her into feeling secure and then he would pounce? She didn’t trust him. Couldn’t afford to trust him.

“There are more ways to imprison a woman than with locks and bars.”

“Why would I want to imprison you?”

Was he genuinely trying to provoke her?  “That’s why I’m here, isn’t it? I’m little more than your prisoner, your captive. I appreciate you letting me regain my strength before I face my fate, but I would prefer to have an indication of what to expect when I am back to full health. What is to be done with me?”

“Now why would you expect that I intend to do anything with you?”

Infuriating man. He was toying with her like an animal trapped in a snare.

“I am in your quarters, am I not? Why am I here if not to be punished in some way?”

“May I remind you that you sailed into my waters uninvited? Had I not plucked you out of the reef, you would now be food for the fish.”

Sailed into his waters? Uninvited?

Everything inside her grew warm. Had she truly made it out beyond the horizon to where she had heard people lived freely? Unencumbered by the king’s tyrannical rule?

Her heart began pounding with joyful relief at the thought she might be free. But if that were so, where was she? This man spoke the same language, ate the same foods.

Maybe it was a trick and the king had meant to test her, find out why she had tried to escape. Had he tasked her guard to ingratiate himself with her, to learn of her plans, her reasoning? To pretend that he didn’t know who she was?

Yet, if this man really didn’t know her identity, and had no idea from where she’d come, maybe she had sailed far from the king’s clutches, to another land.

Regardless, she had to play things very carefully. It didn’t matter where she was. The king’s reach was vast. This man could be in the king’s employ whoever he was, and wherever he lived. The islands that were now under Zomotian rule would never dare go against their new ruler, the king.

She had to think. Had to remain vigilant.

The man surveyed her closely, suspicion heavy in his hypnotic gaze. “When your health is recovered, I will arrange for you to be sent back home.”

Grasping for courage she didn’t feel, she angled her chin into the air. “S…sent back?” Everything inside her went to ice.

Beast Denied (Beasts of Bodmin Moor #2) by Faye Avalon (@Faye_Avalon)

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today.

Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, England is an eerily enigmatic place, especially as dusk falls. For many years there have been rumors of a wild panther-like creature roaming the moor. Despite many sightings, only a few grainy images have been caught on film. An official investigation found no real evidence to confirm such a beast exists, but no evidence either that it didn’t. My imagination went into overdrive and Beasts of Bodmin Moor was born, featuring a covert pack of panther shape-shifters living amongst the unsuspecting Bodmin community.

Beast Denied, the second book in the Beasts of Bodmin Moor series has now been re-released by Evernight Publishing.

Beast DeniedEmbracing the future, means confronting the past.

Naomi Flynn doesn’t intend to mate or marry. Never again will she leave herself open to the manipulation she once endured. Besides, no panther male will want her anyway once they know the truth behind what happened a decade ago.

She’s happy to burn up the sheets in a buddy-with-benefits arrangement, until a hankering for a three-way sexual adventure thrusts her right back into the arms of the man she can’t afford to remember.

Tynan Galloway doesn’t intend to watch the woman he wants throw herself at every male around, except him. A brutal assault might have robbed him of his destiny as a protector of the pack, but damned if Naomi is going to be another casualty of his fate.

When he discovers she’s in potential danger, he challenges her to deny that he’s the one man who can protect her…unaware that Naomi is determined to prove him wrong.

This is a previously published work. It has been revised and edited for Evernight Publishing.

EXCERPT:

From the safety of the hotel bathroom, Naomi Flynn could hear the two men talking, discussing who would have the pleasure of fucking her first.

Leaning back against the locked door, her blood running cold in her veins, Naomi wondered what the hell she had gotten herself into. They’d seemed like regular enough guys, at least while she’d been sharing a drink with them. They’d flirted, flattered, and teased her. So much so that they’d appeared perfect for what she had in mind.

Until they’d locked the door to the hotel room, and with the gleam in their eyes came her first flicker of unease.

A couple of hours ago, Naomi had strolled into the hotel’s bar, intent on having herself one doozy of a party. She’d thought about it long and hard. Wasn’t having sex with two men every woman’s fantasy?

It had worked for her friend. Talia McLeod might now be all loved up with her new husband, their pack’s leader, but before she and Caleb became a couple, they had a triple deal going with Joshua, Caleb’s half brother, now working overseas.

Unlike Talia, Naomi had no intention of finding her true mate in this deal, but she admitted to being more than a little curious about indulging in a ménage à trois and hadn’t been able to shake the desire to try it for herself.

Living vicariously through her new friend had given Naomi a taste for adventure, and had fed her growing hunger to push through her comfort zone and see how it felt to live without constraint. Even if just for one night. The more she’d thought about it, the more she’d wanted it.

Of course, she’d chosen human men to assuage her curiosity. They would keep the whole thing from becoming too intense, too personal. With humans, there would be no complications. No possessive pack males insisting she become their mate or wanting to mark her as theirs.

Because that would never happen. It couldn’t. Not for her.

So indulging her fantasy with the aid of human men had been her only real option. But now, standing in the bathroom of a Truro hotel as the clock struck midnight, it seemed like her only option had gone belly up.

In fact, listening to the men planning what they would do to her when she hightailed it back to the bedroom had the opposite effect from making her hot and adventurous. It made her question her sanity.

With a hard swallow, Naomi hurried over to the window. She peered out and down. Two floors up, with a drop down onto concrete. Shit.

Had things been different, she would have shifted. In her panther state, she could make short work of those two floors and leap to safety before the men even realized she was gone. But that would never happen either. Not again. Over the years, she’d barely mourned her lost ability, and it had seemed the least of her troubles. Tonight, she longed for it.

Running a hand over her stomach, she pushed back the maudlin thoughts that nudged for attention. She needed all her wits about her to deal with her current predicament.

Perhaps she could simply go out there and tell them she had made a huge mistake, that she really wasn’t ready for this and had changed her mind. She’d apologize for leading them on, for getting them all worked up. Well, to be honest she’d gotten herself all worked up. This was what she’d wanted, what she’d planned for.

She stepped back to the mirror, smoothed down her hair. Nerves, she decided. She was simply suffering from nerves. She had never done anything like this before, which made it perfectly natural to have last-minute doubts.

“Hey, babe.”

At the thump on the door, Naomi dropped the sandals hooked over her index finger.

“You planning on joining us anytime soon?”

Naomi turned to face the door. “Just a minute.”

With trembling hands, she reached around and unzipped the short black dress she’d bought only yesterday. She let it slip down her body and pool at her feet. Turning, she glanced at herself in the mirror and saw skimpy black bra and panties, designed to send a man, or in her case, men, wild.

She stepped aside, picked up the dress, and threw it over the bathroom stool. Inhaling a long slow breath, she opened the door.

Excerpt:

“Your place or mine?”

He gave her one of those long appraising looks that set her pulse racing. “I keep searching for the hidden message here.”

She shrugged and hoped to heaven her casual manner was convincing. Especially since her stomach was now doing serious somersaults. “I find you attractive. I’d say it’s reciprocated, unless I’m no longer an expert at reading men’s signals. And we’re both adults. Neither of us are in a serious relationship. Why can’t we act on our impulses?”

“Where do you live?”

Hell, this was really going to happen. She didn’t know whether to be relieved or terrified. She pushed away her half finished meal, her throat tight. “Putney.”

“My place is nearer. Chelsea.”

With her heart beating out of her chest, she glanced away. Could she really go through with this? Could she do this to him?

Before she could question that further, he huffed out a laugh. “Seems you’re still playing the same games.”

She looked back at him. “Meaning what?”

“Coming on to me, but backing off every time I get close to taking you up on what you’re offering. The one consolation is at least this time I can read the signals.”

To hide the fact he hadn’t entirely missed the mark, she shook her head. “And still I don’t know what you mean.”

“Signals. Signs.” Raising his wine glass, he nodded toward her lap. “I’ll bet your knees are clamped so tightly together right now, I wouldn’t get between them if I tried.”

Deliberately, she relaxed her knees. “Maybe I’m worried you’re planning to get back at me for stealing your pants that time.”

His eyes sparkled, but she couldn’t be sure if it was with humor or wicked intent. “I’ve forgiven you for that. Despite the humiliation you caused me.”

“Huh. Some humiliation. I bet your friends slapped you on the back for almost getting me naked, before assuring you I wasn’t worth worrying about.”

She knew she had a reputation in college. That she led most of the guys on before unceremoniously dumping them. But despite her frivolous reputation, she never slept around.

“Most of them called me an idiot for letting you get away with it so easily, but they didn’t know what I knew.”

“What was that?”

He pursed his lips. “My theory. About you.”

“Which is?”

“I think you’re all talk. You always were.”

“And you’d know, of course. Seeing as you’re an expert on women.”

“I know my way around them.”

She bet he did.
