A Scarlet Christmas by D.L. King (@d_l_king)

A Scarlet ChristmasHi Lucy and thanks so much for having me on your blog! I’ve got a new novella out, which is kind of unusual for me as I mostly edit anthologies and write short stories. But this one is special, at least to me. It’s a femdom retelling of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

I started writing this years ago, but put it down and forgot about it. A few months ago, I was going through my bits and pieces (sometimes they give me ideas and sometimes, I decide I need to work on one of them) when I came across the two or three paragraphs I’d written. Evidently the time was right because I actually started dreaming about the story. I’d wake up and want to write down what I’d been dreaming about.

I have to say, I really love this story. It makes me laugh and brings tears to my eyes. And, of course, it makes me hot, too.

It’s a book as much about New York at Christmas time, as it is about learning to care for fellow humans on the planet and lead a good life—and maybe even have fun while you’re doing it.

I do want to warn your readers, though, it isn’t a romance, as stated on Amazon. There really isn’t any love match at all. It’s all about learning a hard lesson and getting on with your life. That’s not to say there isn’t plenty of sex, because there absolutely is! I don’t think anyone can say I don’t put enough of the good stuff in my work.

I thought I’d add a little excerpt, just to give you a taste. This little clip doesn’t have any sex in it. It’s just a bit of an introduction to what you might expect to find. Of course, I think you should buy it now, so you can read it on Christmas, but that’s me.

Excerpt:

Ebenezer looked from side to side. Nothing that could be used as a weapon. He got out of bed and, as he stepped onto the floor, the board he landed on squeaked. The door was locked, buying him time. Where was his phone? Just as he realized he must have left it downstairs, a voice on the other side of the door spoke.

“Eb, are you in there? I don’t want to frighten you. Do you mind if I come in?”

“Who are you? What do you want?” Ebenezer barked, though his voice wavered a bit.

“Eb, it’s me, Sherman. Look, do you mind if I come in? It’s really cold out here.”

“Sherman? Sherman Tindall? Sherman Tindall’s dead. I’m calling the police!”

“Look, Eb, I’m really sorry, but I’m on a tight schedule, you know. I don’t have time and it really is cold in your hallway.” As Ebenezer watched, a gray mist issued from under the door, eventually coalescing into a somewhat transparent, 3D image of his old friend, Sherman Tindall.

“Sherman, it is you. What the devil are you doing here?” Ebenezer asked. “I mean, how did you… what did you do to… I mean, you’re dead—aren’t you?”

“My god, man, don’t you heat this house? Well, this room’s a little warmer than the hall, but really. You’ll catch your death. Mark my words. And I know what I’m talking about,” and he put his semi-solid index finger against the side of his semi-solid nose and tapped twice.

“Heat costs money, Sherman, and why am I arguing with a ghost? You’re not even here. I’m still asleep and having a nightmare—probably from that substandard Chinese food I had for dinner. That’s the last time I order from those guys.”

“You’re not having a nightmare,” Sherman said, “and you have more money than God. Spend a little. That’s what it’s for. You can’t take it with you and don’t I know it? And actually, that’s why I’m here. I can’t stay long.”

“Pity,” Ebenezer said.

Sherman’s ghost huffed and mumbled something about drawing the short straw. “Look, you’ve got to change your ways before it’s too late. I learned too late and look what my afterlife is like. I counted you as a friend in life and I don’t want to see you follow in my footsteps.”

“Why, what’s so bad about your afterlife? You’re out, visiting friends—whether they want you to, or not—what do you expect?”

A high-pitched scream issued from the ghost and then a low moan. He opened his coat and Ebenezer could see a host of tiny creatures pulling and tearing at Sherman’s insides. His organs were ripped to shreds and the walls of his stomach were torn and bleeding. “An eternity of pain, that’s what awaits you.”

Ebenezer shrank back. “Sherman, that’s terrible. Let me call someone, a doctor or something.”

“There’s nothing that can be done. Not for me. I’m dead, remember? I’m only here to warn you.”

“Warn me about what, Sherman?”

“Three spirits will come for you tonight. Do not mock them or it will go worse for you. Trust me on this. They are powerful and they know what you need.” Ebenezer opened his mouth. “No. You must do as they tell you. They are come to help you and that’s all I can say.” Another scream ripped through the silence that followed and was almost immediately cut off. Sherman was gone, leaving Ebenezer standing at the foot of his bed with his hand against his heart.

He added wood to the fire and banked it, then poured another two fingers of scotch and crawled back into bed. That was crazy. He knew he was awake, but that couldn’t have happened. There were no such things as ghosts. He took a drink of scotch and leaned back against his pillows. “Must have been a dream,” he muttered before falling back asleep.

Double Down (Ozark Magic, #1) by N.J. Young (@NeilaRocks)

Thank you for having me on your blog today! I appreciate the opportunity to introduce myself to your readers and talk about my new release, Double Down! Double Down is the first title in my Ozark Magic series. In the first book, you will meet many of the interesting characters that live in the lake resort town of Magic, Missouri. Magic is full of love, adventure, super hot guys, and the occasional murder…

Double DownBlurb:

Izzy Craig might live in a town called Magic, but her life is anything but. After nursing her beloved grandfather, he has passed away, leaving her to manage a busy lake resort and an unrequited crush on the town’s sheriff, Graham Nolan. Things start to look up when Graham’s estranged brother Chris comes to town. If she can’t have one handsome Nolan man, maybe his twin will do.

Graham’s feelings for Izzy have always been complicated . . . and intense. When he realizes that his brother has encroached on his territory, he’s not sure if he can deal. They’ve tried sharing a woman before, and that ended in heartache for everyone. But when Izzy’s sketchy uncle enters the picture, Graham’s cop senses go on high alert. He may very well have to trust his brother, Izzy, and himself, if he wants to keep the woman he loves safe.

Excerpt

Her soft lips pressed against his mouth, causing Graham’s eyes to widen in surprise. He’d sensed her unease, so her sudden aggressiveness took him aback for a moment. She wanted them? Was that what she was saying with this kiss?

Stepping forward, Izzy pressed her body against his and he groaned at the feel of her firm breasts pressed against his chest. When her tongue hesitantly probed through his parted lips, he would have lost control if it weren’t for Chris standing behind her dramatically clearing his throat.

Grasping her shoulders, it took every ounce of strength in Graham to push Izzy away and plant her back on her feet. Her lips were slightly swollen, and her blue eyes had darkened. Before he could catch his breath to speak, a stunned look crossed her pretty face.

“I – I’m sorry. You said this wasn’t the right time. Obviously you don’t want to – I – I shouldn’t have. . .” She trailed off, trying to step away, but both of them reached for her at the same time. Dammit, he hadn’t meant to upset her.

Looking to his brother for help, Graham was relieved when Chris leaned into Izzy without hesitation, easing her worry.

“You have to tell us, baby,” Chris murmured against her ear. “Trust me, we want nothing more than to kiss your pretty lips until your head swims, but you have to tell us what you want first.”

“I don’t want to guess wrong,” Graham agreed, reaching for her hand and entwining his fingers with hers. “It would be easy for us to just take you, toss you on the bed, make you come over and over.” He stepped closer to her as her eyes started to glaze at that statement. “And maybe that’s what you want. Us taking you without you having to actually make the decision.” He brushed her swollen lips with the pad of his finger. “But it doesn’t work that way, sweetheart. You have to tell us what you want.”

“But – but – I thought you liked to dominate.” Damn, that low, breathy voice did things to him.

He had to bite back a groan. The thought of dominating Izzy, tying her up, spanking that pretty round ass caused him to harden to the point of pain. “Baby, I need to know that you want us – together – as much as we want you. We need your consent, Iz. And once you do consent, you should know that we won’t go easy on you.”

Her jaw dropped open a bit as her eyes dilated, and Graham grinned as she tried to figure out what he meant. Behind her, Chris gave him a sly smile.

“I – I —” she stammered, and then bit her lip and took a shaky breath.

“Deep breath, sweetheart,” Chris crooned, his lips finding her ear again. Graham shot him a warning look. If he didn’t quit kissing her, she wasn’t going to be able to form a thought, much less words.

“I – I want you.” Her breathy voice was barely audible, and he stepped close enough to press himself against her, sandwiching her in between himself and Chris.

Taking another long shaky breath, she tried again. “I want both of you – to – to make love to me.” The way her milky skin flushed led Graham to believe that she’d never actually said that to a man before, never asked for what she wanted.

Her words empowered him. She wanted them. She was theirs. He leaned forward to take her lips, cupping her face in his large hands so he could tilt her head how he wanted. His tongue traced the line of her lips until they parted, allowing him access. He swallowed her light whimper as his tongue delved deeper. And she kissed him back. Oh how she kissed him back. When her hands clutched at his arms, he eased back, gently nipping her bottom lip.

“Chris,” Graham spoke to his brother without looking away from Izzy. “Undress her. I want her naked.”

Her breath caught in her throat, and she jerked her head back to look at Chris who smiled wickedly. “With pleasure.”

As Graham backed up to allow his brother room, Chris walked around to stand in front of Izzy. He jokingly rolled his eyes at Graham. “He can be a little bossy,” he said to her with a wink.

Graham watched as his brother ran his hands lightly down her arms, before lifting her arms over her head. He quickly stripped off her black blouse before tugging off the khaki pants she wore.

When Chris stepped back, he darted a glance at his twin, and Graham could see that his eyes were as molten as he felt inside.

Izzy stood before both of them in only her black bra and panties, looking from one man to the other as their steel gazes swept up and down her body, ravenously consuming every inch of her. When a shiver went through her, Graham reached out to envelop her in his arms. “Are we making you nervous, sweetheart?”

She shook her head, a little smile playing at her mouth.

Chris reached out, needing to touch her, and Graham passed her off to his brother. “Are you sure? I know we can be a little overwhelming.”

“I’m sure,” she said, smiling at their concern. “Very sure. I need you. Both of you. I want you both so much, so badly. I just  . . .” She stumbled. “I um —”

“What, baby? What’s wrong?” Graham asked. When her gaze slid away, he lifted her chin up. “Look at me, Iz. What’s wrong? You need to be honest with us or I will smack that pretty ass right now.”

The brief flaring of her eyes told Graham she would enjoy a spanking, his hand pounding her ass. Now, there was some fun they could have later.

Empress of Storms by Nicola M. Cameron (@YesItsNicolaC) #erotica #romance #fantasy

Empress of StormsThanks so much for having me on your blog today! My new novel Empress of Storms is an unusual book for me on a number of fronts. For one thing, it’s my first MF high fantasy erotic romance (and never did I think those words would be used in reference to me).

Secondly, EoS was prompted by a challenge. Some of you may remember a certain author kicking off a kerfluffle in September by putting up a GoFundMe fund in order to write full-time. Which is totally cool, and I support the Patreon concept 100%.

That being said, the writer demonstrated a, let us say, unrealistic worldview on professional writing. After receiving both even-tempered remonstrating and plain old ridicule, she lashed out at her critics with the following:

“I’d like to challenge each and every one of these wonderful women to a writing contest. How about an 80K (that’s 80,000 words people, not dollars!) novel. It needs to be fully edited, proofed and a professional cover designed for it. Oh, and they have only 6 months to do all this. Ok, go.”

Well, I can’t pass up a challenge. I announced that I would go one better and finish an 80K novel, have it fully edited, proofed, and provided with a professional cover in six weeks, and release it as an ebook and trade paperback in November.

Let me take a moment to point out that every writer has his or her own speed. Some write fast, some write slow. Any speed you write at is fine. You do you, baby. But taking an 80K novel from zero to “Whoops, it’s on Amazon” within six m/o/n/t/h/s/ weeks is just not as impossible as some people seem to think. Part of this challenge was to show that it’s possible to do this without sacrificing quality, and while still maintaining something of a life.

I will be perfectly transparent here and state that I did not make my original six-week deadline (due to a killer sinus infection and various stresses on the home front). I did it in seven weeks. Still not bad if I do say so myself.

I’ve also been asked why I’m using Nicola M. Cameron on Empress of Storms. I lifted the idea from the late, brilliant Iain Banks who wrote mainstream fiction as Iain Banks and science fiction as Iain M. Banks. It was a way of differentiating between the two genres without having to use a pseudonym, and I decided to use the same trick here. Nicola Cameron is pretty much associated with MM/MMM fiction by this point, so if you pick up a Nicola Cameron book that’s what you’ll get, whereas Nicola M. Cameron writes MF fiction with occasional forays into MMF. I like to make readers’ lives easier, you see.

EXCERPT

“You’re not what I expected, Danaë.”

“So I gathered. You’re different as well. And I’m very pleased with that.” She reached out and tugged at a curl of his chest hair. “So, shall we try this again?”

“I think we should.” He held up the taper. “With the light or without?”

“With, if it’s all the same to you. I want to enjoy the sight of my new husband.”

“I suspect I’m the one who will be doing the bulk of the enjoying, but as you wish.” Matthias put the candle back on the side table. He was now cast in shadow, but Danaë could still see him well enough. He slid down until he was on his side facing her. “I’m afraid I’m out of practice with bedroom matters. What would you like to do now?”

She thought. He hadn’t kissed her yet, at least not above the collarbones. “I’d like a proper kiss. The one you gave me after the ceremony may have been acceptable for public consumption, but I hope it’s not how you kiss in private.”

“It isn’t.” He moved closer, stroking her shoulder with a finger. “And my apologies for that. I suspect I’ll be apologizing for much of what happened this day.”

“No apologies are needed if you kiss me.”

He did, a sweet brush of lips that made her mouth tingle with anticipation. The next kiss caught her lower lip between his. He sucked gently on the plump flesh, letting it slide free with a soft pop. Their faces were too close to see him smile, but she could feel it somehow.

“You have honey in your kisses, Danaë,” he murmured.

“Only for you, Matthias.”

“Flatterer.”

She dimpled. “Kiss me again and find out.”

This time his kiss was stronger, hungrier. She responded with an equal need, cupping his cheeks and immersing herself in the intoxicating taste of Matthias’s mouth. He tasted of wine and the roast from dinner, and some secret flavor that was unique to him, something dark and very male. It was perfect, sating a hunger she hadn’t known she possessed. She fell back against her pillows and he followed, their tongues sliding against each other in a twisting dance.

He finally pulled back, gasping. “It’s a good thing I didn’t kiss you like that earlier today,” he said. “I would’ve taken you in front of the entire cathedral.”

“Perhaps a bit more than the nobles of Ypres needed to see,” she agreed, breathless. “Not to mention my brother and Patriarch Reniel.”

Matthias tilted her chin up, nuzzling the soft skin of her jaw. “He would’ve had me building shrines in atonement to the end of my days. And your brother would have run me through.”

“Which would have caused an unpleasant international incident.” She arched when his mouth hit a sensitive spot on her neck. “Not to mention I would have to have him executed for killing my husband.”

“It’s a good thing we avoided all that, then,” Matthias agreed, licking delicate spirals on her skin down towards her breast. He stopped at the point where the flesh began to mound and kissed his way to her nipple. Dragging the very tip of his tongue around the areola, he then flicked it across the stiff little nub. “Best we save such things for the privacy of our bed.”

BIO

Nicola Cameron is an expatriate Chicagoan who has lived in England, Canada, Holland, and Sweden, and keeps a confusing amalgamation of languages in her head as a result. Currently located in the clavicle of Texas, she has finally mastered the proper use of “y’all,” much to her Chicago family’s dismay.

Despite a healthy interest in sex since puberty, it wasn’t until 2012 that Nicola decided to try writing about it. As it turned out, the skills she picked up during her SF writing career transferred rather nicely to erotic romance. When not writing, she wrangles cats, smooches her husband, makes dolls of dubious and questionable identity, and thanks almighty Cthulhu that she doesn’t have to work for a major telecommunications company any more (because there’s BDSM, and then there’s just plain torture…).

Character Obsession by Iyana Jenna (@iyanajenna)

Character ObsessionThank you so much for having me on your blog today. I visited with my re-released title, Character Obsession. It was published by my publisher, Breathless Press, but they were closed some time ago. I am so grateful that Evernight adopted this story. I was so happy with some additional parts suggested by my editor here in Evernight. I think they were a great idea!

Blurb:

Chase Riley, a Hollywood actor, is kidnapped. One of the abductors, Luke Nelson, is delusional and thinks that Chase is Elliot, the character Chase plays in his procedural cop series on TV. Luke plans to replay what happened to Elliot on the show with Chase. The worse thing is that Luke gets help from his father who seems to be as crazy as his son.

Chase’s boyfriend, co-actor Aidan Buffett, is on a trip with his sister when Chase is abducted. He grows worried when his call to Chase goes unanswered. Will he ever see his boyfriend again?

This is a previously published work. It has been edited for Evernight Publishing.

Be Warned: m/m sex

Excerpt:

Chase’s mind whirled and before he thought of anything else, he grabbed the door and threw himself out—or so he thought. The man was faster. A lot faster. He seized Chase by his jacket and just—stabbed him in his side. Chase caught his breath, and for some time he didn’t realize what happened. He sucked in a breath and whimpered when the guy yanked the knife out none too gently. Chase felt his world darken so he didn’t notice when the man slipped out of the car, came to be at the driver’s door, and wrenched him out from behind the steering wheel. As his breathing turned labored, Chase grappled at the source of the pain on his side and winced as he grasped it.

“Come on. Move.” The guy grabbed him by the shoulder and pushed Chase in front of him.

Chase swayed in the man’s clutches, but he pulled himself up as he controlled his breath.

Chase attempted to plant his feet as he was dragged up the stairs, but the pain had become too much and he could only comply. At one time the man rested him against the wall, took off his sunglasses, and pulled down his jacket hood, revealing himself. Chase gasped. The man was practically the mirror image of that Bob Nelson he met earlier at the diner, only rounder and much sturdier. And also a lot younger. What worried Chase was this man took off his disguise and didn’t seem too concerned he could recognize him. Not like Chase would be able to escape him and go to the cops, anyway. He was too sluggish to even move. They’d come in the back door, but not much attention was given to them by those at the front desk. Chase suspected that the man had stayed in the hotel long enough that he’d become just another familiar face.

The man’s grip tighten around his arm, but Chase kept his glare toward the receptionist in an attempt to get his attention—which failed totally—for the guy kept his head down. As his abductor dragged him toward the elevator, Chase palmed his side and lifted his hand with dread. It was damp and deep red with blood.

“Don’t do anything you’re going to regret,” the guy whispered to his ear as they got into the elevator, which, to Chase’s dismay, was empty. “I don’t want to have to kill you, Elliot. I love you.”

Chase turned cold at the mention of his character’s name. “I’m not Elliot,” he choked out. “I’m Chase.”

“Hush.” The man pulled Chase’s back against him, wrapping his long, muscled arm around Chase’s shoulders, waving the knife before Chase’s eyes.

Chase began to tremble.

Out of Sync by Bronwyn Green (@Bronwyn_Green)

Out of SyncBlurb:

Ten years ago, Morgan Weaver walked away from everything he loved—his burgeoning career as a composer, his cello, and his best friend, James. Family obligations and guilt keep him tied to a job he hates, and his dreams have collected even more dust than his instrument.

James Shepherd was left reeling when Morgan abandoned not only their dreams of writing and performing together, but their friendship. James forged on to become an internationally known musician, but he’s always felt Morgan’s loss and has never been able to shake the feeling that he’s responsible for the other man’s choice to leave everything behind.

A simple request from Morgan’s sister brings the men together in a way neither of them expected, and long-denied desire bubbles to the surface overwhelming them both. Knowing it’s only temporary, Morgan finds himself lost in a haze of submission, finally able to experience being at James’ mercy and determined to enjoy it while it lasts. James, however, has other plans and is equally determined to show Morgan he can have all he’s ever wanted—including what they have together.

Excerpt:

James stared at Morgan. His wide gaze kept darting between James’ eyes and his lips, and his expression bordered on desperation and need. It was a much better look than he’d had earlier. He’d only seen Morgan that defeated one other time, and he refused to let it happen, again—not if he could stop it.

He tightened his fingers in Morgan’s silky curls and tugged back his head. Giving Morgan all the time in the world to stop him, James slowly lowered his face, but once he touched Morgan’s lips, he was fucking lost. They parted on a gasp, and James wasn’t sure if it was the need for more air or to speak. All he knew was that Morgan’s mouth was open, and he was sweeping inside, tasting the smooth sting of scotch and the warmth of the man he’d never stopped wanting.

Morgan’s fingers clenched on James’ arms, but he didn’t push James away. Instead, he just hung on. James slid his other arm around Morgan’s waist and pulled their hips flush together. The groan that escaped Morgan’s lips as their hard cocks ground against each other was the most delicious thing James had ever tasted.

Anger slammed into lust, and he kissed Morgan harder, deeper, walking him backward until his back was against the wall. When James had come home and found Morgan dozing on the couch with his computer open and an empty glass of scotch, he’d lost it. He’d thought he was getting through to the other man—helping to pull him out of his self-imposed corporate prison. But leave him alone for one night, and he was right back fucking to it.

And the way Morgan had snapped at him had sent James’ emotions careening everywhere. Pride in the fact that Morgan had stood up for himself. Arousal that mixed weirdly with that pride. Worry for whatever had set him off in the first place, because James knew that, as explosively angry as Morgan had been, it hadn’t been directed at James—not all of it, anyway. And concern that this man he cared about was going to continue to trade his happiness for a life of misery and servitude. All of James’ emotions twisted together until the only action that seemed remotely sensible was to kiss Morgan like he’d been dying to since he’d shown up in his office less than a week ago.

He trailed his lips down the side of Morgan’s neck, nipping with his teeth, drawing shudders out of the man. His fingers convulsed on James’ arms, and every little bite drew Morgan’s hips forward in small sharp jerks.

“Jamie,” he breathed. “What are you doing?”

He kissed his way up to Morgan’s ear then sucked the lobe between his lips and flicked at it with the tip of his tongue before releasing him. “I’m doing what you told me to.”

“What…I—” His sentence ended on a gasp as James raked his teeth over that same bit of flesh.

James drew back a little so he could look into Morgan’s eyes. His pupils had practically swallowed the warm brown of his irises. James dragged the pad of his thumb across Morgan’s full bottom lip. “You told me to do what I wanted, remember?”

Morgan nodded, somehow managing to appear both desperately aroused and ready to bolt, at the same time.

“So, that’s what I’m doing.” James chuckled quietly as he tilted his head back and forth as he considered his next words. “Well, maybe not exactly what I want.”

“No?” Morgan’s voice came out rusty, as if he rarely spoke.

“Well, you’re not tied up and naked, and I’m not finding out all the pretty shades of pink your arse can turn.”

Morgan’s eyes dilated a little further, and his breath caught, his chest lifting and holding tight against James’.

“Nor is my prick buried balls deep inside you, so…no. I’m not doing quite what I want. Not yet.”

Morgan swallowed thickly. “Oh.”

“But I’m not going to do any of those things.” James thrust against Morgan, unable to keep his hips still.

Morgan thrust back, clearly needing more than James was giving him. “You’re not?”

James leaned forward and nipped the other man’s lower lip, pulling back slightly before releasing it. “Not yet.”

“When?” the other man choked out.

“Here’s the thing, Morgs… If this is going to make you run from me like it did last time…” His voice cracked a little on that last word as ten years’ worth of guilt suffocated him. “Make you run from the things that are most important to you, it’s not happening. Not now, not ever.”

Lips slightly parted and gaze hungry, Morgan shook his head.

James sobered. “If all I ever am to you is your friend, I’d rather have that than tonight… No matter how fucking hot I know it would be.”

Morgan met his gaze, and James couldn’t glance away if he wanted to.

“I’m not looking to pick out china patterns with you—you don’t need to worry about that,” James rushed to say. “I’m in no position to be in a relationship. And, from what I understand, you’re in no position to be completely out.”

Morgan nodded slowly.

James ached for the other man, hating that he felt he had to hide who he was, but James pushed it aside. That wasn’t up to him—it wasn’t his choice to make. He took a deep breath and pushed back to the conversation at hand. “But, no matter how hard I want to make you come…no matter how badly I want to feel your mouth around my cock, I’m not willing to be the cause of not seeing you, again, for another ten years.”

Morgan fisted the front of James’ shirt. “When’d you get so fucking noble?” Without waiting for an answer, he yanked James forward and captured his lips, pushing inside and taking his mouth as thoroughly as James had claimed his moments before.

Lily G Blunt Talks Taboo Stories

11953153_536139079867709_8171992208798765693_nMany thanks for offering to host me on your blog, Lucy.

Today I’d like to focus on taboo stories and their publication.

My current WIP is a taboo story. You may well ask what made me decide to write this tale and what inspired my initial idea.

I enjoy reading taboo stories—mostly those involving brotherly love and twincest—and thought I’d like to have an attempt at writing one myself as there aren’t many available. I also wanted to write across several genres and was considering contemporary, romance, historical and paranormal when I started to formulate an idea.

Thinking of a setting for a ghost story, I recalled an old building I was familiar with, along with its history. Picturing this imposing house in its grounds and the nearby church helped when planning the outline of my novella. I adapted the building’s background to fit my story, changing the names of the owners and a few structural details. But because I had a particular place in mind, I could visualize it, along with my characters interacting within this imaginary world.

The story is set in modern times and focuses on two brothers whose relationship is unclear at the start, but as the chapters unfold it is obvious they have been sexual partners at some point. The ghost/paranormal plot involves two brothers who’d also been involved in an incestuous relationship.

My original plan was to make the story more acceptable to a wider readership by having the contemporary brothers discover they are not blood related after all and for the elder one to have been adopted as a baby. However, this all sounded contrived when I came to write it and went against my idea of writing a taboo story—even though that aspect would still have been covered by the ‘ghost’ plot. In the end, I altered my plan so they remained blood brothers, who, by the end of the story, are together as lovers and are accepted as such by most of their family and friends.

I frequently proclaim ‘Love is Love’ on my Facebook pages and other social media profiles and that is the main theme of this story. The story is titled Let Your Heart Decide and that’s what my characters do. They choose each other because it feels right for them. My story is about love and romance. Yes, it contains some explicit sex scenes between the two brothers, but no more than any of my other stories. Hopefully, I’ve portrayed the true nature of their feelings and readers will sympathize with their situation, whether they personally disagree with incest or not.

I’m not going to focus on incest and whether it is immoral or wrong or whatever. That’s not why I’m writing this post. I want to air my views on publishing taboo stories because it’s not easy to do.

Many publishers declare in their submission requirements ‘No incest’, so I’ve decided to self-publish my novel—yes, it went from novella in my outline plan to novel by the time I’d written the story.

Knowing Amazon’s guidelines on what they accept is rather vague and they themselves are inconsistent in implementing their policies, I am considering PayHip, Smashwords and other means to make this story available. I will attempt to upload it to Amazon because that’s where most ebooks are sold and because there are taboo and incest stories available there despite many being banned. I’m researching the best means to tag the book and how to present the blurb so the story is accepted. (Any advice here will be received gratefully.) I’m sure some narrow-minded bigots will object and report it whatever I do, even if they have no intention of reading the book themselves.

I don’t intend to take on Amazon and their dubious policies. I wouldn’t stand a chance against them. It’s their site and they make the rules, but I would question their inconsistent and double standards. As I’ve said, many taboo stories remain for sale, even those with that given title.

So what’s the problem? Why ban some taboo and incest books and not others?

All these stories are fiction. Incest is illegal for opposite sex relations in many countries. But then so is murder, rape, abuse and violence against another, kidnapping etc., yet there are numerous stories with those abhorrent themes available for sale on Amazon, along with books containing explicit sex, and many sex toys and other ‘kinky’ items. People read about murderers and rapists and kidnappers despite it being offensive, but it doesn’t mean they condone these acts. Fiction can be a means of escape, a way to explore a world you wouldn’t normally partake in.

So what’s the real issue here?

Why can’t Amazon allow people to make up their own minds? The customer, as with the purchase of any item, has the choice whether to search for and view it. When purchasing a book, you get the blurb, reviews, and a chance to read a sample of the text so you can determine if it’s suitable for you. No one is there forcing you to press the ‘1-Click’ button. And even if there are books for sale on the site you don’t want to see, it’s quite simple to move on. No one is demanding you look or buy. Please know there are many readers out there who would like to have that particular option open to them. It is a rapidly expanding readership and I’m looking forward to the time when Amazon and other publishing sites realize this.

EXCERPT:

Vinnie led me across the room, pulling me by the shirt. “Lie back on the sofa for me and I’ll paint you.”

As if in a dream, I settled my head against one arm of the sofa, my legs dangling over the other end, scarcely breathing now. Vinnie knelt on the floor beside me with an open pot of paint in his hand.

Teasingly, he dipped his index finger into the dark blue paint as if it were cream he would lick off. His finger connected with my skin and he made short strokes across my chest, the coldness of the paint making me shiver.

Mesmerised by the closeness of his beautiful face, the view of the night sky through the window, and the picture forming upon my chest, I watched as dab after dab and stroke after stroke he built up a mix of shades, until a dark night sky with the moon and stars were there to be seen—a masterpiece, drying on the warmth of my blazing skin, a transient thing of beauty. His fingers skimmed my skin causing gooseflesh to ripple in waves down my arms and thighs. My nipples pebbled in response to his touch.

And when he was done, his lips met mine in a languid kiss; how our first kiss should have been—sweet, innocent, and full of promise. He pulled away, smiling down at me.

This was the beginning of something special.

BLURB:

A love of art…

A mutual interest in art draws two shy university students together. Ben admires Vinnie’s painting of the university building, so Vinnie invites him to an exhibition of his artwork. From a wealthy family, Ben purchases some of Vinnie’s art and arranges for the artist to personally hang the paintings in his apartment.

Starry, starry night…

Ben commissions Vinnie to paint his portrait, in order to spend more time with the artist. On the night of the sitting, Vinnie fingerpaints the starry night on Ben’s chest… and they kiss. They begin a relationship beneath the night sky, God’s own canvas.

But every relationship has its ups and downs and so it is with theirs. When Ben thinks Vinnie spends too much time with a fellow artist, his jealousy drives a wedge between them and forces Vinnie into the very thing Ben dreads.

Hold tight to your dreams…

Ben and Vinnie will have to walk through fire before they can find one another again. But if they believe, and if they keep their faith in the night sky and each other, just maybe they can make their dreams of love come true.
