To Swing or Not to Swing, That is the Question by Jennifer Denys

Kink After DinnerStanding before the door, she shook her fingers to calm down. She was equally excited and nervous, and ran a hand over her stomach as if to quell the butterflies.

Not too flabby. She hated her stomach—as did many women her age—but one advantage of a basque is that it held everything in. At least until she took it off.

She made a face.

Okay, but if I’m on my back the flab spreads out and doesn’t make me look like I have a beer belly. Must remember to avoid being on top.

This is a short excerpt from my latest short story ‘Kink After Dinner’. I had fun writing this story about a married, middle aged woman with a son at university and an 18 year old daughter who thinks her parents are old-fashioned. Beth suffers from hot flushes and an expanding waistline. This is very much taken from my own experiences (at least the menopause and weight gain – the only person in my household is Holly the rabbit).

However, Beth decides that life is too short. Shedding her inhibitions she takes up BDSM and ‘swinging’.

A final, hasty glance down the street confirmed there was no one about, and she knocked, slightly worried about entering this house. If her daughter knew this couple were swingers, then chances are others did—and what would the neighbours say if they saw her visiting on her own?

Hearing some footsteps, she said to herself in a resigned tone of voice, “Too late now.”

Wikipedia says that, according to 2005 estimates by the Kinsey Institute and others, swingers account for two to four percent of married couples with numbers in excess of 4 million people in North America. As of 2011, some experts believe that there are as many as 15 million Americans swinging on a regular basis. I have certainly met a small number of women who also have boyfriends as well as husbands or someone they co-habit with, possibly because of the nature of what we write and most of us being women. Generally it isn’t something I’ve ever heard a non-erotica writer admit to doing.

The phenomenon of swinging is regarded by some as arising from the sexual revolution of the 1960s, but much of what you read refers to ‘wife swapping’ rather than ‘husband swapping’ but just one section on Wikipedia talks about the wife taking male lovers.

Among the Bari tribe of Venezuela, when a woman becomes pregnant, the women often take other male lovers. These additional lovers then take on the role of secondary or tertiary fathers to the child. If the primary father should die, the other men then have a social obligation to support these children. Research has shown that children with such “extra” fathers have improved life outcomes, in this economically and resource-poor area of the jungle

(Hey, can I have two men to help me take care of the rabbit? LOL)

So, back to ‘Kink After Dinner’ – Beth meets up with her swinging friends and has a great time. Did I call on my own experiences in relation to the BDSM and ‘swinging’?……….I will leave that up to your imagination!

To find out more about what Beth gets up to here is the blurb:

Kink After Dinner. 8pm. Usual place. Wear the new purple basque – no knickers. Expect some SERIOUS (!) paddling. No touching until then. Master.

Beth hurriedly hides the note she has received so her family won’t see it.

Her daughter regards her parents as stuck in the mud. If only she knew!  When Beth decided to throw off her inhibitions she was able to thoroughly enjoy her middle years, despite the usual body issues, including attending a BDSM event and starting a relationship with a Dom.

Putting on her purple bustier and high heels as ordered, and covering up with a coat, she leaves her husband engrossed in his carpentry workshop to walk to a neighbour’s house. This is the home of swinging couple, Alistair and Helen, with whom she’s had several encounters over the past year. And this begins a wonderful evening of kink—bondage, spanking, paddling, handcuffs, and orgasm denial.

Then her husband turns up.
