Mid Week Tease: “You know you have my full support in this.” #MWTease

mid-week-tease-buttonHi everyone,

Welcome back to Mid Week Tease! Here’s another snippet from my recent re-release, The Persecution of the Wolves (previously titled Pack of Lies). I hope you enjoy it!

The Persecution of the WolvesHuffing out a breath, he left the house and crunched down the driveway to his car. He hardly used it, since he lived and worked in the village, but it was useful for shopping—the nearest large supermarket was not within walking distance—and heading up to the moor, which was about a mile and a half out of the village up a very steep hill. Matthew could get up there with no trouble thanks to his werewolf genes, which made him much faster and fitter than the average man, but he feared the vicar, despite being only thirty-five, would find it much harder work. Time was of the essence, too. They needed to get up there and scout out the area and look for evidence before too many other people walked over it or the weather turned.

Starting the engine of the four-by-four, he maneuvered off the drive and onto the road before turning in the direction of the rectory. Eyam was so small that it took barely a minute to get there. Honking the car’s horn, Matthew waited for the vicar to come out and gave him a friendly wave when he appeared.

The clergyman, Richard Denys, waved back as he approached, seconds later opening the door and clambering up into the passenger seat.

“Morning,” Richard said, slamming the door shut. “I’m really sorry to have bothered you with this, especially since you only just got home.”

Shrugging, Matthew said, “It’s not a problem. I’m not working until this evening and I’m happy to help out. It’s in Isaac’s and my interests to find out who or what did this before the finger of suspicion points at us.” He turned the car around and headed back in the direction he’d come, then after a little while, indicated right.

“I hate to say it, but it is a possibility. You know you have my full support in this. I know you and Isaac change down in the caves and have done so for years. Even if you didn’t head down there every full moon, I still wouldn’t believe you did this.”

Mid Week Tease: Matthew grimaced. He hated texting. #MWTease

mid-week-tease-buttonHi everyone,

Welcome back to Mid Week Tease! Here’s another snippet from my recent re-release, The Persecution of the Wolves (previously titled Pack of Lies). I hope you enjoy it!

The Persecution of the WolvesStepping into the room, Matthew looked at his brother. He was half-dressed, ready for his shift at the doctor’s surgery, where he was a general practitioner. “Sorry to interrupt, mate, but that was Richard on the phone. They’ve found a mutilated sheep up on the moor, and he’s asked me to go with him to check it out.”

Isaac paused with one arm pushed into his shirtsleeve. “He doesn’t think—”

Matthew cut him off. “No. He was quite adamant about that. He just thought we’d be able to help figure out what did it. I explained that you’ve got to go to work, though. I’m going to head across there now and go up with him.”

“I could phone in, let them know I’ll be late.”

Matthew held up his hand. “There’s no need, brother. Relax. Just go to work and help the sick people. I’ll let you know what—if anything—I find out.”

Opening his mouth, then closing it again, Isaac seemed to have thought better of whatever he was going to say. He continued to dress. “All right, I will. But make sure you let me know what happens. Send me a text or something, and I’ll phone you as soon as I have a gap in between patients.”

Matthew grimaced. He hated texting. Hated mobile phones, actually. Technology was one of the things he disliked most about modern-day life, though he realized it was a necessary evil. It solved as many problems for him and his brother as it created, so he dealt with it as best he could. Fortunately, Isaac had always had an affinity with computers and phones, so he tutored Matthew.

“Yeah, all right. I’d better go and find my phone first then, eh?”

Smirking at his brother’s rolled eyes, he left the room and headed for his own bedroom, where he thought he’d left the device the previous night before he and Isaac had headed for the caves. Immediately spotting the mobile phone—which Isaac often made a point of telling him was akin to a brick—he grabbed it, stuffed it into his pocket, and made his way downstairs.

Retrieving his keys from the hook by the front door, he called up to his brother. “I’m going now, Isaac. I’ll see you after my shift at the pub. I’m working until closing time.”

“Okay. Don’t forget to keep me posted!”

“I won’t.” As if he could forget. The dead sheep was going to be a big thing, he just knew it. The vicar might not think he and his brother had anything to do with it, but some of the other villagers might. When there was no proof either way, just his and Isaac’s word, it was understandable, really. Since he and his brother changed into wolves every full moon, it was a natural conclusion to draw. Particularly since normal wolves had been extinct in England for over five hundred years.

Mid Week Tease: “The vicar’s news was surprising…” #MWTease

mid-week-tease-buttonHi everyone,

Welcome back to Mid Week Tease! This week I’m switching up to another book. The Coming In Hot boxed set has now released (grab it here), so I want to show off some snippets from my recent re-release, The Persecution of the Wolves (previously titled Pack of Lies). I hope you enjoy it!

The Persecution of the WolvesAs Matthew and Isaac Adams opened the front door to their house, the telephone started ringing. Matthew sighed. “Typical. No rest for the wicked. I’ll answer it, you go and get ready for work.”

Isaac nodded and headed off to do as his brother advised. Matthew, the older of the two, walked toward the ringing phone and snatched it off the hook. Then, remembering that the person on the other end of the line would have no idea what a rough night he’d just had, he made the effort to inject some politeness into his tone.

“Hello? Adams residence.” Isaac had told him time and time again that the last part about the residence was old-fashioned, that people didn’t say that anymore, but Matthew couldn’t seem to shake it.

“Hello, Matthew? It’s Richard.” The village vicar’s voice, even though he’d only spoken four words, sounded strained, almost panicked. “You boys just get back?”

“Yeah, a moment ago. Why, what’s up?”

“I, uh… I got a call. A dead sheep has been found up on the moor. Not just dead. Mutilated. Like a wild animal attack.”

An unpleasant feeling wormed its way under Matthew’s skin and his stomach flipped. “Oh?” He paused, then figured he had nothing to gain by not saying the next words he wanted to. “You don’t think it was us?”

The vicar’s gasp was instant, one of genuine surprise. “Lord, no! Absolutely not. I just phoned to let you know and I was wondering if you’d come up there with me and take a look? You and Isaac are probably more qualified than anyone else in the village to tell what did this.”

“Isaac has to work, he just went to get ready. But yes, I’ll come up. I’ll let my brother know where I’m going, then I’ll be straight over. Are you at the rectory?”

“Yes. Okay, I’ll see you soon. Thanks, Matthew. Bye.”

“Goodbye.”

Matthew hung up the phone with another sigh. The horrible feeling that had crept under his skin and taken over his gut seemed as if it was there to stay, and it was never a good sign. The vicar’s news was surprising, yes, but he also had an inkling that it was going to spell trouble, or at the very least, inconvenience for him and his brother.

Pulling in a deep breath in an attempt to calm his jangling nerves, Matthew walked upstairs and toward his brother’s bedroom. The door was closed. He knocked. “You decent?”

“Yeah,” Isaac replied, “close enough.”

Mid Week Tease: “That’s fine, dear boy.” #MWTease

mid-week-tease-buttonHi everyone,

Welcome back to Mid Week Tease! This week I’m posting another snippet from my M/F novella, On Her High Horse, which is part of the Coming In Hot boxed set, releasing on 19th September. Pre-order now for just 99c/99p! This snippet follows on from last week’s.

Coming In HotStill, if she wanted a vet to see the animal, to pay their not-inconsiderable call out and treatment fees, then that was down to her. “I see. All right, no problem. Bear with me for just a moment, please, Ms Hanson-Bishop. I’m just going to pull up the diary on the computer and see when I can get to you.”

“Certainly.”

Pressing the ‘hold’ button on the phone, he placed the handset down on the desk before switching to the relevant programme on his computer and pulling up his schedule. Next up was his visit to Brian Thatcher’s place to see a cow that was having a difficult pregnancy. Then he had to get back to the surgery because another farmer was bringing in his three sheepdogs for their annual checkups and inoculations. That would easily take until close of play—if not a little longer—so Ms Hanson-Bishop and her horse would have to wait until the following day.

Preparing himself for some bitchiness, Brett took a deep breath before retrieving the handset and pressing the ‘hold’ button again. “Ms Hanson-Bishop?”

“Yes?”

“I’m afraid my schedule for the rest of today is full, but I can squeeze you in first thing tomorrow morning. Would that be all right? I’m on my own, you see, so things are manic here, to say the least.”

“That’s fine, dear boy. I know Andrew has taken a well-deserved holiday. My mare is hardly going to keel over due to mild thrush. Tomorrow morning is absolutely fine. What time should I expect you?”

Shaking his head incredulously at the sudden change of attitude, Brett swallowed hard to try and combat his sudden dry mouth, and finally forced out, “8 a.m. If that’s not too early?”

Letting out an unladylike snort, she replied, “I’ll have been up three hours by then. Not too early at all. You’ve got the address and contact details in your system, I presume, so I’ll see you then. Toodle pip!”

She’d put the phone down before Brett got chance to reply. Immediately he logged into the client database, hoping like hell that her address was indeed stored, otherwise he’d be up shit creek without a paddle.

Mid Week Tease: “Yes, Andrew is a top notch vet.” #MWTease

mid-week-tease-buttonHi everyone,

Welcome back to Mid Week Tease! This week I’m posting another snippet from my M/F novella, On Her High Horse, which is part of the Coming In Hot boxed set, releasing on 19th September. Pre-order now for just 99c/99p! This snippet follows on from last week’s.

Coming In Hot“I can assure you, Ms Hanson-Bishop, that I’m a highly-trained, fully-qualified veterinary surgeon, with a great deal of experience. I’m sure whatever it is, I’ll be able to deal with it.” The sugar he’d dripped into his voice made him want to vomit—and he might have even given himself diabetes. He’d chosen rural work, rather than something in a town or city, because he was down-to-earth. He preferred to deal with farmers simply looking to earn an honest wage or folks with crazy, scruffy dogs that went everywhere with them. Socialites with tiny dogs they kept in handbags, or pampered cats with dyed fur and painted claws weren’t really his thing.

Apparently, though, even the Yorkshire Dales had its fair share of prissy, precocious types who thought they were the centre of the universe.

The prissy, precocious person in question replied, “Hmm… well I suppose Andrew wouldn’t have you working with him if you weren’t competent. A wonderful man, Andrew. Wonderful vet, too. My horses just love him, even when he has to poke around with their unmentionables.”

Yanking the phone away from his face just in time to stop himself spluttering with laughter into the mouthpiece, Brett clapped his free hand over his mouth. Taking a moment to compose himself, he cleared his throat before replying, “Yes, Andrew is a top notch vet. I’m not surprised your horses like him. In his absence, however, I’d be more than happy to come out. Can you tell me what the problem is, please?”

“Of course. One of my mares has thrush.”

Brett frowned. From her tone and lack of urgency, he’d already guessed that the situation wasn’t dire—but thrush? Someone in her position should be able to deal with that type of minor issue with her eyes closed and her hands tied behind her back. Spotted and treated quickly, the condition wouldn’t affect the animal too much and would have no lasting effects. And Samantha had already diagnosed the problem, so she clearly knew what she was talking about—or had someone working for her that did.

Mid Week Tease: Would she just get to the point already? #MWTease

mid-week-tease-buttonHi everyone,

Coming In Hot“Probably wise.” Natasha left the room, closing the door behind her, but not before Brett spotted the slight smile on her face. Relieved to pass on the bitchy customer to him, no doubt.

Taking a deep breath, he picked up the phone. “Hello, Brett Coulson speaking. How can I help?”

“Oh,” came the reply, “Brett. Ah, yes. You’re the other vet, aren’t you? Jolly good. Know what you’re talking about, do you?” The woman’s accent was posh, southern. Like she’d been to a finishing school or something.

Gritting his teeth, Brett then pasted a smile on his face, hoping it would be apparent in his tone, despite the daggers he was actually staring at her through the handset. “Yes, I most certainly do.” Should fucking do, after five years of training and the same again working in the profession. I’m not on bloody work experience here.

“But you sound so young.”

Glad she couldn’t see him, Brett rolled his eyes. Her problem obviously wasn’t an emergency, the way she was waffling on, time-wasting. “I’m almost twenty-nine, Mrs…”

“It’s Ms, actually. Samantha Hanson-Bishop here. So you’re still a baby then.”

“Is there something I can help you with, Ms Hanson-Bishop? Only I’ve a call to go out on in a few minutes.” He couldn’t help the emphasis he’d put on the Ms. It could be construed as sarcastic, but it was still a damn sight more polite than anything he really wanted to say. Would she just get to the point already?

“Yes, yes, of course. That’s why I’m telephoning. I just wanted to make sure I was speaking to someone who actually knew what they were talking about. Clearly your receptionist doesn’t know anything about animals, much less my thoroughbred horses.”

Ah, okay, that made things clearer. The stuck-up, posh bird ran a stable. Now the haughty attitude made sense—she was entitled, bored, and thought she was better than everyone else. Wanting to defend Natasha—who was, in fact, very knowledgeable about animals, it being part of her job and all—Brett had to bite his tongue. If the woman, however snobby and irritating, ran a stable of thoroughbreds, then she was no doubt bringing plenty of money into the practice. They were doing okay, but the loss of a big customer without a replacement wasn’t something they’d be able to sustain for very long. And word of mouth was very important in this game—he didn’t want her bad-mouthing him or the surgery.
